What began as a fun hobby became a passionate career.

Filipino DJ Julie Lim—also known by her alias, beanslut—discovered a deeper connection to music while working as a college radio DJ. From there, she explored local producers and genres that led her into the heart of Manila’s vibrant nightlife. From private sets to her debut as a resident DJ for party and art house Aeterna and a memorable Halloween set for Elephant Party, Lim continues to build a soundscape uniquely her own—rooted in community and driven by intention.

Sets and Scenes

“As a DJ, I’ve always had a strong understanding of where I fit in terms of sound,” Lim said. She gravitates toward elektro, progressive house, acid, and breakbeat, often weaving in alluring, feminine beats and dreamlike synth.

A piece of advice from her mentor stuck with her: “Look for the blank space on a page full of scribbles.” It’s something she carries into every set, especially as she continues to grow and evolve within the industry. “Even if everything today could be inspired by something else, it’s the unique flavor you bring that makes it yours. That’s what gives it character, and that’s what makes it you,” she explained.

As a lesbian DJ, Lim finds affirmation in FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Trans, and Agender people) spaces. “It is the community that fuels my love and passion for the craft,” she shared.

“It’s incredibly affirming to share lineups with people who have similar tastes, quirks, and values; who prioritize community just as much as the music.”

Sounds That Resonate

More than late-night sets and dance-floor highs, club culture has always been about release, freedom, and inspiration—and DJing feeds into that. “DJing has always resonated with younger creatives,” Lim observed. Beyond beats and drops, the craft is a marriage of sound, visuals, movements, and even fashion—art forms that collide on the dance floor.

“Maybe it feels especially relevant now because we’re overstimulated with media. DJing offers something visceral and real in contrast,” she continued.

"My sets tend to live in that intersection of playfulness where I kind of just let myself enjoy the process and let things flow," Lim shared.

Spinning beats, building sets, layering sounds, and commanding decks—Lim believes the magic of DJing lies in selection and intention. “It has always been what journey you want to let your crowd experience,” she shared. Even in a world driven by playlists and AI-generated music, the human element of DJing is irreplicable. “Reading the room, taking people on a journey, and creating a shared emotional arc—an algorithm can’t replicate that kind of connection.”

The Heart of Beats

For Lim, DJing is all about dialogue—between the DJ and the crowd, during the set and long after. When the transition lands right and the crowd reacts with excitement, it creates an unforgettable rush; a high she will chase in high-energy spaces.  Even post-set, conversations and feedback are part of what makes the experience immersive.

In an unconventional yet exhilarating industry, Lim offers one piece of advice to aspiring creatives: “Let your sound come from a place of joy and curiosity.” Because while DJing can get technical and intense, at its core lies playfulness, joy, and connection.

“You attract community, you find your people, and you create something meaningful—not just for others, but for yourself as well.”
