In a world where delicate features, dainty frames, and fair skin still define K-beauty ideals, reality TV star and athlete Kang So-yeon is rewriting the rules. After appearing in Netflix’s Korean reality dating show Single’s Inferno, transitioning into acting hasn’t been easy for the athlete—mainly because she doesn’t fit Korea’s stereotypical beauty mold.

Still, that hasn’t stopped her. She doesn’t mind being too tall or having too big a frame—especially when brands are lining up to work with her.

Built for the Spotlight

Before Single’s Inferno, So-yeon trained as an idol under JYP Entertainment starting in 2006 and eventually debuted in the co-ed group WE in 2011. However, the group was only active for two years. Following her reality show appearance, she returned to music and debuted as a soloist with the digital single “Loca Loca.”

So-yeon remains determined to stay in the spotlight—ideally as an actress or musician. But given Korea’s rigid beauty standards, landing roles haven’t been easy. One thing’s for sure, though: when it comes to sports, she’s in a league of her own.

Stronger Than Standard

So-yeon is, first and foremost, an athlete. Tennis, golf, boxing, weightlifting, cycling—you name it. She may not be fronting luxury fashion campaigns, but her athletic image has landed her partnerships with brands like Porsche, Alo, Maui Jim, Lululemon, and more.

With her strong, sculpted physique, So-yeon joined the 2024 cast of Physical: 100, fully leaning into the sporty identity she’s built over the years. Proud of her body, she continues to challenge the narrow definitions of beauty in Korea—one competition and campaign at a time.

Kang So-yeon is carving her own path. She may not receive the same roles or recognition as other influencers, but by staying true to herself, she’s reshaping what beauty can look like in Korea. It may not fit the nation’s traditional standards—but maybe it’s time those standards changed.

Keep up with Kang So-yeon’s journey as she continues to break and redefine Korean beauty ideals.
