Who Is Mariah Deborah, the Artist Behind Na Para Bang?

To get it out of the way, Mariah Deborah is not a stage name. It is, in fact, her real name, as she was born Mariah Deborah Cabatbat. She hails from Pangasinan and has been exposed to music all her life, as her parents are also musicians. Deborah graduated from UP Baguio in 2024 with a degree in Communications. While 2026 has been her breakout year, she has actually been releasing music independently since 2020.

The singer-songwriter and producer even dropped her debut album, i wanna eat your intestines, in 2023. But as we’ve seen multiple times, it can take a while for the general public to catch up to underrated gems, and for Deborah, that was three more years. She dropped her breakout single Na Para Bang on February 13, 2026, just a day before Valentine’s Day. Back then, the song didn’t really make waves on the charts, but over time, and especially these past weeks, social media latched on to the OPM track, leading to its explosive growth, and it’s not hard to see why.

Deborah was inspired to write the song because of the “na para bang” meme and her own experience of having feelings for a friend. The result was Na Para Bang, a sapphic-coded introspective track that shines with Deborah’s voice you can easily get into, catchy sound, and relatable lyrics, particularly “Sabi sa sarili ko, wala lang ‘to. Pero ba’t sa’yo na’ng aking Sabado?”, a line that captures what happens when those feelings you try to push away from someone you never thought of romantically can easily occupy your mind.

As the track catchily puts it, that nobody can be your somebody who takes up your whole Saturdays and then some, which should tell you that you are in love.

Realizing that someone might actually be more than just a friend and debating whether or not those feelings are real is a Top 10 universal experience many people will likely go through, and Deborah nails that push and pull between taking the risk and acting on those feelings or ignoring them to protect the friendship. Liking a friend, after all, is not the kind of feeling to be processed quickly because it feels somewhat exciting yet forbidden at the same time.

It might seem obvious to people watching from the outside, but to the people involved, especially the one carrying the mixed feelings, it’s not and often doesn’t come with an easy yes or no. Na Para Bang is almost like a confession, but not in a way that is a direct admission, because the reality is that it can be confusing to navigate.

Na Para Bang’s Chart Success

It’s a kind of complicated yearning that easily translates to a live performance, so it’s no wonder then that the charming track has captivated social media and been heard almost everywhere, from fan edits of ships to love stories about how two friends became more than that. That social media virality has translated to real-world success. Na Para Bang is currently the No. 1 song on the Spotify PH charts and the Billboard Philippines Hot 100. Deborah also became the first Filipina OPM artist since BINI to top the Apple Music PH charts.

The song’s success is not unlike that of other contemporary OPM tracks, such as Cup of Joe’s Multo and Maki’s Dilaw. In fact, Na Para Bang is even making waves internationally as it debuted on Spotify’s Global Daily Chart, where it currently sits at No. 131 with over 1.3 million streams. In doing so, Deborah became the first-ever female OPM artist to debut on the Spotify chart and is currently the top Filipina artist on Spotify PH.

The fact that this success and historic records are being achieved by a young independent artist who has no major label backing makes it more impressive. It just goes to show the power of a great OPM song can travel wide and that women and queer voices will always play an important part in OPM’s growth and continued success.

Many have found a new rising star in Deborah, and she has years’ worth of tracks to get into for those who have been playing Na Para Bang non-stop. Among her highlights are Bahagya, her most recent single that centers on a romance between two women that is hindered by religious guilt, and Hibang, a song about forbidden love and the complicated feelings that come with it. Keep Mariah Deborah on your radar, because this breakout star is taking her emotionally soulful tracks to the mainstream.
