A Look Back at Alex Eala’s Historic 2026 Mubadala DC Open Run

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the 2026 Mubadala DC Open’s newest champion, Alex Eala. The 21-year-old tennis star has once again solidified her place as a future legend in Philippine tennis after her triumphant showing at the DC Open, earning her first-ever WTA 500 title and first hardcourt title of her professional career. More importantly, she becomes the first Filipino in history to win a WTA 500 championship.

“Standing here in the middle of all this love, my first chance at a title, knowing that it won’t be my last, and already having achieved this feat and this milestone for my career, I knew that whatever would have happened after this match, it would have already been a win for me,” said Eala after the match.

A first for herself and the Philippines, Eala continues to soar, and the best part is that it happened following a run that can only be described as iconic, as she bested some of the most skilled tennis players in the world to get to the top. It’s a kind of title run that will be remembered in her career and one of those moments that establishes Eala as a global force in tennis.

Alex Eala Takes On and Triumphs Over the Best 

Alex Eala’s journey at the 2026 DC Open began when she faced Qinwen Zheng in the first round. As the reigning Asian Games and Olympic champion, Zheng was no easy first opponent. But Eala proved the better player as she scored a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory to advance in the competition. The win meant that Eala achieved a rare feat of defeating all three Paris Olympics medalists, with the other two being silver medalist Donna Vekic and bronze medalist Iga Swiatek. 

Next, the Filipina athlete went up against Leylah Fernandez, the now-former reigning champion of the DC Open. Just like at Wimbledon with Iga Swiatek earlier this year, Eala denied Fernandez a back-to-back championship when she beat her with a score of  6-2, 7-6 (1), making it the second consecutive competition where Eala bested the reigning champion. 

Afterwards, in the quarterfinals, Eala’s opponent was World No. 10 Elina Svitolina. As she’s proven time and time again when it comes to facing top-tier players, Eala came out on top 6-3, 6-4. For the semifinals, it was a battle of the titans as Eala competed against Naomi Osaka. With four Grand Slams to her name and as one of the most famous female tennis players in the world, former World No. 1 Osaka presented Eala stiff competition. But it was a challenge the Filipina ace overcame in straight sets of 6-4, 6-2. 

Finally, as Eala reached the finals of the DC Open, she faced what arguably was her strongest competitor, World No. 3 Jessica Pegula. The American champion was hoping to deny Eala the championship title. And initially, it seemed like that was possible when she scored 6-4 in the first set. Eala rebounded with a score of 2-1 before the match was delayed to the following day due to the rain in Washington, DC, which added to the suspense and anticipation. When the match resumed, Eala gave it her all and won the second set with a score of 6-4. 

In an all-or-nothing third set, Eala came through for a stunning 6-0 victory in her final round, serving as a great capstone to her DC Open campaign. With a final score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, Eala not only got revenge against Pegula after she ended her breakthrough run at the 2025 Miami Open during the semifinals, but she also walked away victorious as the Mubadala DC Open’s latest champion. 

A Moment to Be Remembered

It goes without saying that Eala had the odds stacked against her. From Olympic champions to Top 10 players with multiple titles to their name, it was challenge after challenge. But in each round, Eala was more than up to the task as she outplayed them, including the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 seeded players of the DC Open. She delivered a historic run to become the first Filipino to win a WTA singles title. 

Also, Eala has won her last five matches against Top 10 players and overall has defeated Top 10 players seven times in 2026 so far. When all is said and done, Eala is expected to reach World No. 20 in the WTA rankings, a career-high and the first time she’s ever reached the Top 20. Add to that her win at the Birmingham Open earlier this year and historic Wimbledon run, and Eala has been having an exceptional 2026 so far.  

At just 21 years old, this young Filipina scored the biggest victory of her career in an remarkable campaign that demonstrated her at her best and how she continues to get better at the game. She continues to write history for herself and for the country in what is undoubtedly a career-defining highlight and achievement.
