Alex Eala Is on a Sensational Run at the DC Open

Alex “The Giant Slayer” Eala. That’s the energy the Filipina tennis star has been bringing to the Mubadala DC Open for over a week in what has been her first competition since her short but eventful return home to the Philippines. After a strong grass court season, Eala is proving that she’s still ready to make history and defeat some of the best along the way. Case in point: she is now heading to the finals of the DC Open after having bested 4-time Grand Slam Champion Naomi Osaka.

Alex Eala Is Heading to the DC Open Finals

Heading into the semifinal match, Alex Eala had momentum on her side. She bested Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who is currently ranked World No. 10, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 event, making it the sixth time this year that Eala won against a Top 10 player. For what was just her third semifinal appearance of the season, Eala faced Naomi Osaka, a top-tier player in her own right who was once the World No. 1 and has four Grand Slams and even more WTA titles to her name. 

But as we’ve come to expect from Eala, never underestimate her as she bested the third-seeded Osaka in straight sets of 6-4, 6-2, earning her ticket to the title match of the DC Open. This is Eala’s first-ever finals appearance at a WTA 500 event and on a hard court in her professional career and she also makes history as the first Filipina to reach a WTA 500 singles final. Also, this is just her second final of any WTA event since the 2025 Eastbourne Open, where she lost to Australia’s Maya Joint.

It was an impressive victory, and one that adds to Eala’s unstoppable run at the WTA 500 event. Along the way, she has bested champions and top players such as current Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and the competition’s reigning champion Leylah Fernandez. Also, since she began playing at the DC Open, Eala hasn’t dropped a single set in all her matches. 

As Eala hopes to score a career-first WTA 500 title, she’s set to face World No. 3 and American No. 1 Jessica Pegula in the championship match. The two have faced off before, with Pegula defeating Eala at the Miami Open last year, ending her historic run at the competition. No stranger to facing titans before, Eala is gearing up for one of the most important matches of her career, and we’ll be rooting for her. It goes without saying that this is the biggest final of her career so far, but win or lose, the Gen Z athlete has done her big one in Washington DC and proven that she continues to get better and better at her game.
