With P-pop’s growing popularity, it may be surprising to some how the sub-genre was mocked and ridiculed by the public just a few years ago. Back then, P-pop was seen as a cheap copy of K-pop, and P-pop groups weren’t up to standard. But now, P-pop is becoming more widely accepted and, in fact, is finding an audience beyond the Philippines with major and historic achievements around the world courtesy of homegrown P-pop groups.

Leading the way are the Nation’s Girl Group BINI and pioneering boy group SB19, who have been particularly busy this year as their influence extends beyond the country. Case in point: they became the first Filipino artists to join Weverse last March, a popular South Korean-made social media platform used by A-list K-pop stars like BTS, BLACKPINK, and SEVENTEEN. It gives BINI and SB19 even more options to connect with their global fans as well as widen their appeal while still staying true to themselves. Both groups are already dominating the pop culture conversation, and in the next few months, they are set to take P-pop to greater heights around the world.

If 2024 was the year BINI broke through to the mainstream, 2026 is when the eight-member girl group takes their career to the next level with milestones and historic achievements. Of course, we can’t talk about BINI without mentioning their Coachella performance. As the first P-pop group and all-Filipino group to perform at Coachella, BINI performed on their biggest stage yet and did not disappoint. The group delivered two stellar sets across two weekends that ricocheted far beyond Coachella Valley, becoming one of the most talked-about artists at this year’s festival that amounted to an estimated $5.4 million in earned media value (EMV) on Weekend 1 alone, accroding to data by influence marketing platform Lefty.

Beyond Coachella, BINI has also been busy with back-to-back honors and events. Before performing at the festival, the girl group attended Filipino Heritage Night with the Los Angeles Clippers at the Intuit Dome with custom jerseys to match. They became the first P-pop group to guest in the NBA’s celebration of Filipino culture and the Filipino-American community in basketball. Post Coachella, BINI will perform for the first time at the GRAMMY Museum under the Global Spin Live banner, the same platform that has seen performances by LE SSERAFIM and ENHYPEN, to name a few.

On April 29, BINI will then be honored with the Billboard Women In Music Global Force award as chosen by Billboard Philippines. Becoming just the second Filipina act ever to receive the honor following Sarah Geronimo in 2024, BINI will attend the 2026 Billboard Women In Music in Los Angeles where they will be joined by other honorees like HUNTR/X (Women of the Year), Laufey (Innovator), Tate McRae (Hitmaker), Teyana Taylor (Visionary), Zara Larsson (Breakthrough), and fellow Global Force awardees The Beaches.

If that wasn’t enough, once BINI flies back to Manila in May, the group will hold their first major performance in the country at ASAP XP on May 10 at the Araneta Coliseum. After that, the recently-named Nike ambassadors will then prepare for their upcoming Signals World Tour 2026, which opens with a two-day concert at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on June 20 and 21, followed by a show at the SM Seaside Cebu Arena on July 11, before they head overseas. BINI also isn’t done with international music festivals this year as the group is part of the lineup for Summer Sonic 2026, where they’ll perform in Osaka on August 14 and Tokyo on August 16.

In the middle of their busy schedule, there’s also the personal achievements of members Sheena and Stacey, who officially graduated from senior high school on April 14, making every member of BINI senior high school graduates.

SB19 – Taking P-Pop to New Heights

When SB19 debuted in 2018, they faced ridicule from a public that did not take them seriously. Not only did they persevere, but they also helped pave the way for how OPM is seen and treated today. And this year, the group is showing little signs of slowing down. Last April 18, SB19 held their massive and sold-out Wakas at Simula: The Trilogy Finale at the SMDC Festival Grounds.

If there was any doubt the group could one-up their Simula at Wakas concert at the Philippine Arena last year, they proved it wrong. Tens of thousands of fans from all around the world gathered for the group’s biggest concert to date. From a fireworks display, complex stage design, special guests including Japanese boy group BE:FIRST, and more, the five-member boy group went all out in one of the grandest shows P-pop and OPM have ever seen. It was a spectacle that ended this chapter of their career and welcomed a new one.

Speaking of a new chapter, it includes performances at global music festivals. Like BINI, SB19 is breaking a record at one of the world’s biggest music festivals as they were included in the lineup for Lollapalooza this year. Set to take place from July 30 to August 2 at Grant Park in Chicago, Lollapalooza is a name familiar to many music fan. And in 2026, SB19 will make history as the first P-pop, Filipino boy group, and Filipino act to perform at the prestigious festival.

Joining the group in the lineup of the 2026 edition are a who’s who of superstars like Olivia Dean, Charli XCX, Tate McRae, Jennie Kim, and Lorde. Though SB19 won’t be the only Filipino performing in Chicago, as also part of the lineup is Filipino-British indie-pop star beabadoobee.

Not long after, SB19 will then fly to Japan as they are slated to perform at Summer Sonic in Tokyo on April 15, which is one of the country’s biggest music festivals.

Clearly, P-pop’s global expansion is far from stagnating as SB19 and BINI proudly represent themselves, P-pop, OPM, and the Philippines on the world stage. Also, their continued success is helping lay the groundwork for other P-pop groups, who have also been putting in the work to further the genre.

Girl groups like G22 and KAIA have previously performed overseas reprsenting the Philippines, BGYO joined SB19 in the DUNK (Dance Universe Never Killed) showcase in Japan last March and member Gelo recently collaborated with Vietnamese artist Vũ Thảo My for the SEA pop single Zealous (Gã Săn Mồi), while other acts like VXON, and ALAMAT continue to establish their P-pop bonifides. As P-pop continues to grow, so too are the talented artists owning the spotlight.
