Wild Things: Tilda Swinton Stars in a Series of Cartier Short Films

The wild, it seems, has found its most distinctive narrator.

Give Tilda Swinton a Cartier Panther and, naturally, things are about to get interesting. The Scottish actress joins Cartier as its latest ambassador, lending her unmistakable voice to a new creative project devoted to the Maison’s wild fauna creations for the high-jewellery collection, Into the Wild.

For her first campaign, Swinton narrates a series of short films in which Cartier’s jeweled animals meet within handcrafted worlds shaped by gold lacquer, marquetry, mosaic, and paper bas-relief. The camera moves across a panther’s articulated body, catches the light, enamel and gemstones glint against carved gold, and tiny animal forms emerge from richly layered textures as though they have slipped out of a dream.

The films place Cartier’s artisans alongside its creatures, tracing how traditional techniques bring the Maison’s fauna to life. Hands sort fragments of wood for marquetry, brush lacquer across curved surfaces, set stones one by one, and build mosaics whose irregular pieces create the illusion of fur, feathers, or scales. Paper is cut, folded, and raised into delicate bas-relief, while gold is shaped and polished until each creature seems poised to move.

“We celebrate here the exceptional beauty of these rare techniques, and the dedication of the artisans involved. They have created the perfect imaginary world to showcase Cartier’s savoir-faire and how it comes to life in precious wild fauna creations. I am very proud to become a Cartier ambassador and to lend my voice to this shared creative adventure.”

The craftsmanship may be meticulous, but the animals themselves have attitude: jeweled bodies are suspended, eyes gleaming with mischief, and silhouettes that come alive in the light.  At the center is the Panther, Cartier’s enduring emblem of independence and instinct.

Swinton also appears in a series of portraits wearing Cartier’s fauna creations alongside its signature collections. It is a fitting pairing: Cartier has long found inspiration in the animal kingdom, while Swinton has made a career of inhabiting the unexpected.

At the heart of it all is the Panther, Cartier’s most famous beast and perhaps the Maison’s most enduring symbol of independence, sensuality, and controlled ferocity. First appearing in Cartier’s vocabulary in the early 20th century, the animal has since taken on countless forms, from sleek spotted silhouettes to sculptural high jewelry. With Swinton now lending her voice to the kingdom, the Panther has found a rather compelling new accomplice.

‘Wild’ can mean untamed. It can mean instinctive, eccentric, fearless. At Cartier, it can also mean an animal rendered in precious stones, its claws sharpened in gold and its gaze fixed in diamonds. With Tilda Swinton, the wild gets a voice.
