Peng-Peng Lee: From Elite Gymnast to Pop Artist

Her Olympic dreams may have taken a different turn, but Peng-Peng Lee found another stage to conquer: pop music.

By

Before she was performing under stage lights, Christine “Peng-Peng” Lee was learning how to stick a landing.

For years, the Chinese-Canadian gymnast knew the stage as the balance beam, uneven bars, and blue spring floor. Now, she’s trading gymnastics for another lifelong dream: pop music. In 2024, she began her journey as an independent pop artist, trading routines and competitions for songwriting, recording, and performing.

The Elite Dream

Gymnasts are known to start young—much like Lee, who first stepped into the sport at four before taking it seriously at 10. By then, she was already winning medals at the Canadian National Championships.

For years, gymnastics was her life. Lee rose through the ranks of Canadian gymnastics, but was forced to take a two-year break to recover from spondylolisthesis and spondylolysis, spinal conditions that kept her from competing.

Still, she persevered. She competed at major meets, including the Pacific Rim Championships and World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, establishing herself as one of Canada’s top gymnasts. However, just before the 2012 Summer Olympics, a knee injury forced her to withdraw from the selection process.

By 2018, she retired from the sport. But cheesy as it may be, perhaps retirement was simply a redirection.

A Flip to the Pop Life

In 2024, Lee transitioned to music, turning a lifelong dream of becoming a pop artist into reality. As an independent artist, she dedicated herself to developing her sound and performance, eventually bringing the skills she learned as a gymnast into her work onstage.

The leap from gymnastics to pop may look unexpected, but the two worlds have more in common than meets the eye. Both require discipline, precision, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure—even when the stage has transformed from a spring floor to a concert platform.

What once made Lee a competitive gymnast now gives her a foundation as an artist: the training, physicality, and performance instincts to command an entirely different kind of stage. If retirement marked the end of her gymnastics career, music may simply be Lee’s next way of performing—not as the athlete she once was, but as the artist she has always wanted to become.
