Paying tribute to the woman who first believed in him and advanced his career in fashion, Puey Quiñones dedicated his Holiday 2019 collection to MEGA’s Founding Editor, Sari Yap.

Puey Quiñones is no stranger to the fashion industry. He has not only been recognized locally for his ingenious creations but also globally, especially now that he’s based in Los Angeles. And as he has recently returned to Manila to open his atelier, he goes back to his roots and presents his successful masterpiece for MEGA Fashion Week 2019.

The moment the show started, you’ll immediately know you were in a Puey Quiñones’ runway show. With the accompaniment of the dramatic piano and the violin, the drama was bound to unravel. And truth be told, the first look did it justice–a yellow flowy silk dress that was effortlessly captivating.

One look after another, each ensemble that emerged on the runway was different from each other—from the silhouettes to the design technique he used. The MEGA Young Designers’ Competition winner also painted the catwalk with vibrant hues that were marvelously achieved with bejeweled and sequinned embellishments, as well as silky satin fabrics.

According to Puey, “the inspiration for my collection [is that] the silhouette changes from different eras and generations. From the colors, silhouettes, to fabrication, I used different kinds of textures and print. Because every time I create a collection, I like to create one that doesn’t look the same.”

But more than that, there is actually a deeper meaning behind his collection, an homage to his dear friend and mentor, MEGA’s Founding Editor Sari Yap. Backstage, Puey explained that when Sari visited him in Los Angeles last year, she told him “not to forget [his] DNA in fashion.”

So, for his second MEGA Fashion Week collection, Puey didn’t forget to highlight what he’s really famed for: monastic pieces punctuated by bustier capes and monk sleeves, frothy tiered tulle numbers as well as draped dresses that impeccably brought the drama.

For his finale look, the international designer made it a point to create a look Sari would love, which he achieved with a marvelously draped silk gown that enthralled everyone. In Puey’s words, “this is for my love of Sari, who has been a very good friend of mine and a mentor. I’m nothing without her. She believed in me since day one.”
