Fashion Week Asia: PONDER.ER Pays Tribute to the People Who Built Hong Kong

PONDER.ER transforms the city’s scaffolding, architectural lines, and everyday workers into a collection that balances structural precision with vulnerable softness.

By

Beneath the towering skyscrapers of Hong Kong, a city shaped by its architectural landscape and the people who built it, creative duo Alex Po and Derek Cheng find inspiration for their label, PONDER.ER. For the two designers, the city they grew up in is a chaotic symphony—one that informs a collection paying tribute to Hong Kong, from its towering structures to the communities that bring it to life.

An exploration of the power of lines—from urban cables and architectural landscapes to the simplicity of a line drawing—the Hong Kong label celebrates this concept in true PONDER.ER fashion, where vulnerable softness meets something more structural. “We hope the audience can really dive in and engage with the colors and textures we bring to the show,” Derek Cheng told MEGA.

A Quiet Revolution in Dressing

PONDER.ER’s signature design elements made themselves known at Fashion Week Asia, from smocking on gender-fluid pieces to its play on sheerness. Toward the end of the show, a long yellow shirt dress stood out as a piece made specifically for the occasion. “It’s about a quiet revolution of liquifying wardrobe classics into something elevated and different,” Cheng explained, reflecting the duo’s approach to reimagining familiar silhouettes.

Hong Kong’s scaffolding has long inspired the label’s designs, from layers of transparent netting to hard bamboo structures. But beyond the towering buildings and intricate frameworks is the collective of people who inhabit and build the city.

“We wanted to pay tribute to the workers and people in the community who have built the city,” Cheng shared, pointing to the workwear elements and headscarves incorporated into the collection. In doing so, PONDER.ER looks beyond Hong Kong’s imposing skyline to recognize the people whose labor and resourcefulness have helped shape it.

Building a Place in Asian Fashion

As representatives of Hong Kong at Fashion Week Asia, Po and Cheng are determined to make a mark with their brand. Their collection reflects not only the city’s architectural character but also the ingenuity of the people behind it—a fitting expression of the resourcefulness they see in Asian fashion today. “I’m so honored to be part of this rising creative community,” Cheng said.

“It’s the spirit of pushing boundaries and being resourceful and innovative in what we do—something we see so many Asian designers achieving with their creations nowadays.”
