For years, Bessie Besana built collections from the outside in—drawing from the places he traveled, the artifacts he studied, the histories he admired. With Desolate Heart, unveiled FILIPINXT, the platform he founded, at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2026, he turned inward for the first time. What emerged was a confession: clothing as language for emotions he had long kept quiet.

“I want to show a little vulnerability,” he said. “This is the first time I am designing based on emotions, and this collection is a testament to that.”

That vulnerability took shape in garments where beauty and struggle are stitched into the same seam. A white suit, its purity marked by black tulips, spoke of Besana’s time in the Netherlands, when travel became a refuge during personal battles. Tulips usually suggest renewal, yet his black blooms insisted that darkness, too, has a place in life’s garden.

Eveningwear, the first love that set him on the path to design, returned with newfound clarity. Clean silhouettes and classic lines anchored his vision, while pieces like a hooded gown—its skirt draped and tucked without the safety net of a pattern—embraced unpredictability. The process itself became a metaphor: acceptance of what cannot be controlled, recognition that beauty often grows out of the unplanned.

“I got lost in designing through the years,” he admitted. “But this collection brings me back to my roots.” Those roots feel personal and universal—an intimate act of repair rendered in fabric, yet resonant for anyone who has known sorrow and the relief of release.

For all its weight, it was cathartic. “It has always been hard for me to express my emotions,” Besana said. “This collection was able to tell my story through my work. I also allowed myself to move on and leave things in the past.”

Desolate Heart is a therapeutic act for Bessie Besana. It provided an opportunity where even sadness may be turned into something that allows the light to shine through.
