EXCLUSIVE: BINI’s Mikha Lim Thinks Your Next Fitness Goal Should Be Community

With MILI, Mikha Lim is building an activewear brand around the way she actually likes to exercise: without the pressure, and preferably with friends.

No one really prepares you for how lonely it can be to improve your relationship with your body. When you make the choice to be healthier, so much of the language around it immediately becomes individual. You understand, of course, that you’re doing this for yourself, so it’s up to you to show up and remain consistent with your goals. But on the bad days—and there will be some—it’s remarkably easy to stay inside your own head, just entertaining every doubt until you’ve talked yourself out of trying at all.

“I don’t have to necessarily work out,” Mikha Lim shares with MEGA. It certainly makes sense coming from a member of BINI, whose work already demands movement on a near-daily basis. “My relationship with exercise is very versatile. I’d rather do something that doesn’t feel like a workout, like going for a hike, doing Pilates, playing volleyball, or trying different sports. I love stretching too because I feel like that’s my forte. I do need to get back at it.”

How Mikha Lim Is Building MILI Beyond Activewear

Lim doesn’t make exercise more complicated than it needs to be. She wants to be healthy, and she sees staying active as a way to keep becoming better without demanding perfection from herself. Now, she’s bringing that same outlook to MILI, her newly launched activewear brand designed to fit into everyday life.

“When I was finding the right product for my business, I was looking at things that existed now that were ubiquitous, and also something close to what I do,” she explains. Activewear eventually made the most sense. “I love sports and trying different activities. It felt like I was creating clothes that I wanted to wear, which is so cool.”

Its first collection, aptly called First Form, is meant to be exactly that: a beginning. The debut brings together performance sets, structured separates, lightweight layers, and everyday pieces in a subdued palette of Oat, Mocha, Olive, and White. Some are fitted and sculpted for activity; others fall more loosely against the body. Taken together, they make enough room for whatever being active happens to look like that day.

But for all the ways MILI reflects her own relationship with exercise, Lim doesn’t want the brand’s identity to begin and end with her. “I want people to discover this brand because it is a good brand and not because it’s mine,” she says. “I want it to stand alone.”

“I want it to be a community where people can meet others, explore things together, be comfortable in their own skin, and be comfortable in MILI.”

Finding Your Fitness Community Can Make Starting Easier

Of course, staying active comes more naturally when you’ve already found an activity you genuinely like. Starting is a different matter, especially when you’ve never considered yourself particularly athletic in the first place. Fitness can have a funny way of looking like a pursuit you need to be good at before you’re allowed to participate in it, though Lim doesn’t see it that way. For her, being active is for everyone, regardless of size or whatever hobbies already occupy your time. More importantly, she doesn’t think you have to do it by yourself.

“Don’t let that stop you from trying to be more active,” she smiles, referring to those who have never considered themselves ‘fitness people.’ “Being active is so fun! I think you should invite your friends, make time for it, and really just enjoy what you do.”
