It wasn’t in the stars—or on the itinerary—for Kim Chiu to celebrate her 35th birthday fully glammed up in the middle of the desert. “My only plan was to chill and do absolutely nothing at home,” she posted on Instagram. But thanks to her sister Kam Chiu, who staged a surprise desert shoot in Dubai, the actress ended up trading pajamas for poetry in motion—draped in a gown that caught the sunrise just in time.

Designed by Jot Losa whose best friends with Kam, the look wasn’t planned, but it felt predestined. A silhouette made from satinized chiffon, cut in vibrant fuchsia, billowed against the golden dunes like a royal standard unfurling in a desert breeze. “The setting demanded something poetic,” Losa says. “A striking silhouette that would ripple with the wind and glow against the sand.”
Unlike her more embellished gowns in the past, this carried a sense of reverie: a gown that stood confidently, almost like one with the sun. “We leaned into ease and movement,” says Losa. “A quiet kind of confidence that speaks volumes.”
There’s a reason the pairing between Chiu and Losa works. “There’s an unspoken synergy,” he shares. “Kim brings a grounded elegance that naturally shapes the design process. She leads with presence, not noise—and that inspires restraint and refinement.”
If Chiu’s birthday dress says anything about where she is now, it’s that she’s choosing clarity over clamor. “She’s embracing garments that breathe, that move with her,” Losa observes. “There’s a beautiful clarity in her style now: intentional, effortless, and deeply her.”
From the chaos of a 3AM glam call to the calm of sunrise over sand, the shoot captured a rare mix of spontaneity and serenity. In that fuchsia-drenched moment, Kim Chiu reminded us—that magic isn’t always planned; it’s summoned by sisters who insist, designers who get it, and sunrises you almost miss.
