Just like that, the 2026 awards season has come to a close with the 98th Academy Awards. Serving as the last and biggest awards show on the calendar, the Oscars 2026 honored some of the best movies and performances of the past year, with top honors going to One Battle After Another, which took home the main prize for Best Picture. But the acclaimed action-thriller wasn’t the only film to get the spotlight as box office hits, indie favorites, and streaming sensations also walked away with Oscar glory.

The top winner of the 2026 Oscars, One Battle After Another took home six awards, the most Oscars of any film in the ceremony, including Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson. Since it premiered in cinemas last September 2025, the movie has been seen as an awards frontrunner with its frenetic action, stellar ensemble acting, and relevant themes. It may be a lengthy watch, but that shouldn’t stop you from experiencing this modern masterpiece about a father and daughter trying to reunite in the face of government persecution.  

Sinners – A 1920s Horror Spectacle

It is said that Hollywood doesn’t have any original ideas anymore. But Sinners proved that it still exists, and when given the proper support, it can thrive. This action-horror movie about a group of people trying to survive the night against vampires impressed audiences worldwide with its compelling plot, diverse cast of characters, and themes that explored the intersection of music, culture, and identity. Its four Oscar haul, including a surprising but deserving win for Michael B. Jordan for Actor in a Leading Role, proved its cultural staying power.

Weapons – Meet Aunt Gladys

Horror had a strong year in 2025, and the genre had an equally strong presence at the 2026 Oscars, which is rare for the genre at these kinds of events. No truer is this than with Weapons and its win for Actress in a Supporting Role for Amy Madigan. But if you’d seen the movie, you’d know why she was a strong contender this awards season. Featuring an unconventional structure of multiple intersecting plotlines, the movie tells the story of how an entire class of children vanished in the middle of the night and its effects on a small community. It’s creepy, unsettling, and elevated to unnerving heights with the film’s antagonist, Aunt Gladys, and the part she plays in all of it.

Kpop Demon Hunters – Sealed The Honmoon

Winner of Animated Feature Film and Original Song for Golden

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Kpop Demon Hunters has become Gen Alpha’s Frozen. But aside from being a pop culture behemoth, it’s also a solid movie that combines spectacle, mythology, memorable characters, a catchy soundtrack, and a proper understanding of K-pop and Korean culture. It all makes for a solid viewing experience and one of the most unique from the past year.  

Frankenstein – Gothic Horror Showcase

Guillermo del Toro is a master in worldbuilding, as exquisitely seen in his adaptation of Mary Shelly’s seminal work. The technical work behind Frankenstein is on another level, which is no wonder it swept many of the craft categories. But beyond the horror fantasy film’s gorgeous production quality is Jacob Elordi’s best performance yet as The Creature and the hauntingly tragic tale of Victor Frankenstein and his quest for power that ultimately becomes his undoing.

All the Empty Rooms – The Silent Tragedy of School Shootings

Winner of Documentary Short Film

This timely yet mournful documentary follows Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp as they memorialize the untouched bedrooms of children who were killed in school shootings across America, hence the movie’s title. The documentary uses the empty bedrooms as somber time capsules to tell powerful stories of young lives lost. Four children and their bedrooms were featured in the movie, and one of the parents of the victims, Gloria Cazares, was present at the Oscars as she talked about her daughter, Jacklyn Jaylen Cazares, a victim of the Uvalde school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and the horrors of gun violence.

F1 – A Thrilling Race

While the F1 movie has the kind of Hollywood drama that may not be accurate to what actually happens in motorsports, it does feature excellent technical quality, kinetic direction, and thrilling racing sequences that pack a punch with their attention to detail. The film, which tells the story of F1 racing driver Sonny Hayes as he helps an underdog team, hits the checkboxes with its F1-coded adrenaline rush.
