It’s all smiles for Collina Strada’s latest NYFW runway and here’s what you need to know about the collection

The last fashion week in New York was all things playful and whimsical, as seen on Private Policy’s We Are All Animals, Area’s Fabulous Fruits, and Rodarte’s Goth Fairy. Adding to this list of eccentric collections is Collina Strada’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection titled Soft is Hard.

It’s not the first time Collina Strada attracted the attention of the global fashion scene with their unusual line of designs. For last year’s collection, the models walked down the runway finished in prosthetics that made them look like animals. The reason behind the idea was to unify the ecosystem of all animals. The fashion brand established their constant advocacy towards environmental sustainability in various ways, which is why their Spring/Summer collection was very much aligned to their brand identity.

Satin, gingham, and fur-like patterned fabrics shifted to frills, layers, and laces for their new collection. It embraced a distinct femininity that we have seen people recreating on social media. Draped skirts paired with corsets, and distressed shirts layered with camis and ruffles had their time on the runway as well.

Sustainability continues to be Collina Strada’s advocacy since they used upcycled materials in their accessories. As for the hand-beaded detailings seen on their denims, it only showcases the level of intricacy the fashion brand has in their designs. As the collection progressed, we were able to pick up on the concept of marrying the contemporary and the organic became clear. To put it simply, Collina Strada was able to blend elements of the modern world and the natural world seamlessly

Not only that, but a detail that truly captured the attention of the fashion industry was also the smiles the models had as they walked down the runway. Analyzing the model’s appearances, smiles were forced and fists were clenched and these are not normal runway etiquette. To give a background on why this was specifically incorporated, Creative Director Hillary Taymour shared, “Everything sucks. We’re all doomed. The world’s on fire, but we’re doing a fashion show because that’s what we know how to do.” Theatrical? Perhaps, but it’s the wake-up call that its audiences and everyone else needs to hear.
