The Kings of P-pop have done it again. Many consider SB19 to be a pioneer in the genre, and for good reason. The group is arguably the first of the new generation to help popularize and reframe P-pop as more than just a copycat of K-pop, but its own thing rooted in Filipino music, culture, identity, and talent. Over the years, the group went from virtual unknowns to influential stars, and that impact was more than felt at Lollapalooza.
As the first-ever Filipino act to perform at the iconic music festival, SB19 brought their signature talent, stage presence, and Filipino charm to the audience at the Allianz Stage at Grant Park in Chicago, a good portion of whom were Filipinos carrying the Philippine flag, and their fans watching around the world. Despite performing early on the festival’s opening day in broad daylight, Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin delivered a captivating hour-long nine-song set. Coming out of the gate strong, SB19 kicked off their record-making Lollapalooza set with their chart-topping and fan-favorite DAM. Making the moment extra special was how it featured a new arrangement and dance break that brought the energy from a 10 to an 11. It served as a great opening that laid the groundwork for what was to come.

Whether it be Filipinos or foreigners, SB19 knows how to get the audience pumped and hyped. That was the case at Lollapalooza with the crowd jumping along to the group’s songs and chanting “NOYPI” during VISA.

SB19 didn’t just use their set to perform some of their greatest hits, but also debut their latest tracks. Alongside fan-favorite songs such as DAM and Dungka was the first-ever live performance of their newly released single LAWLESS, which made for a great debut for SB19’s next era. Also, their Lollapalooza set saw the group give the crowd a first taste of their reworked version of Francis M’s classic anthem Mga Kababayan, which will be included on the soundtrack for DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island.

A special guest joined SB19 on stage, but it wasn’t who you probably thought it was. During DUNGKA!, the group brought out Benny The Bull, the Chicago Bulls’ mascot, to dance alongside them during the high-energy track. Was it unexpected? Yes. But it also spoke to how SB19 knows how to have fun and not take themselves too seriously for a lighthearted moment alongside a Chicago icon.

It was expected that SB19 would deliver vocally, but it just hit differently seeing them do so at Lollapalooza. While a strong crowd of festival-goers, American A’TIN, and Filipinos gathered at the Allianz Stage to watch SB19 live, their fans back home made sure to catch the historic moment with watch parties, both in-person and online. Despite their set happening during the early hours of July 31 in the Philippines, A’TIN gathered across the country to catch the action as their energy and excitement looked like they were there in Chicago and not in the middle of the night.
