Never one to shy away from her Filipino heritage, Alex Eala honors her roots by carrying a piece of home on and off the court.

At just 21 years old, Alex Eala is arguably the most important Filipino tennis player of the generation. She isn’t just the most successful Filipina athlete in the sport right now; she is also breaking barriers in tennis, helping it reach a wider audience in the country. Eala recently added to her growing legacy during her historic Wimbledon run, where she became the best-performing Filipino tennis player at a Grand Slam in the Open Era and also went viral on social media with, among other things, her horizontal forehand. As Eala’s star continues to rise and make waves in the sport, she’s doing so proudly representing the Philippines.

From speaking Tagalog at victory speeches and post-match interviews to wearing Filipino designers, thanking her Filipino fans, and more, Eala has always been vocal about her heritage and about sharing it on the world stage. Even as she prepares to compete in the Mubadala DC Open on July 27, Eala made time to return to the country, and she even has a special fanmeet on July 15 in Makati.

That tradition of honoring her Filipino roots also extends to her on-court attire with added touches that aren’t just for the aesthetic but are a tribute to the culture and Eala’s journey as a pioneering Filipina athlete. When Eala hits the court, these Filipino-coded details are right with her.

As the national flower of the Philippines, the sampaguita holds special meaning as a symbol of Filipino heritage and culture, and it has accompanied Eala in some of her biggest matches. When Eala made her Wimbledon debut in 2025, Nike gifted the Gen Z tennis player a custom-made sampaguita hair tie that has become somewhat of a signature look for her. Along with the hair tie was a special handwritten note that had the quote “Kung may tinanim, may aanihin”.

The gesture wasn’t just a gift for Eala’s first Wimbledon match but a reminder of who she is, the hard work she put in to get to that moment, and how, regardless of the outcome, the seeds have already been planted. Often the only Filipina in the competitions she’s a part of, Eala’s presence and success don’t just lay the groundwork for future growth but also lay the foundation for the next generation of Filipina athletes to come after her.

Eala carried her heritage on the court at one of the biggest tennis competitions in the world, even if it was just for one match. It may be a small detail in the wider scheme of things, but it holds big meaning for Eala as a Filipina in the sport.

A Visor at Wimbledon That Carried the Dreams of a Filipino Athlete

Eala captivated the world with her groundbreaking Wimbledon 2026 run, where she became the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam. And at the back of her head was a saying that summed up the work she was doing in the competition. Nike once again sent a custom gift for Eala for Wimbledon, this time a white visor with the Tagalog phrase “Kapag lumago, hindi na hihinto” embroidered on the back, which was also printed on a custom sweatshirt she wore outside of matches.

What Eala did at Wimbledon was nothing short of iconic, and the custom visor not only embodied her continued growth and evolution but also signified that there’s no stopping what’s to come. What was once a dream for a young Alex Eala became a reality as all those years finally bore fruit. And the best part is that there’s still a lot more in store for Eala, with each win and loss contributing to her becoming a better player in the future.

As Eala continues moving forward towards her dreams and goals, she’s inspiring other young Filipina athletes to do the same and be hopeful that they can do it themselves, too. In moments like these, a match isn’t just a match for Eala but an opportunity to realize the athlete she only once dreamed of becoming and show others like her that it is a possibility.
