Whether it’s weaving through train stations during the morning rush, strolling along the shore with waves brushing against their feet, browsing weekend markets, or taking an evening wellness walk after hours, walking has become an everyday ritual for many Filipinos. Beyond simply getting from one place to another, it offers a rare opportunity to slow down and reconnect with the world around us.
It’s this mindful approach to movement that inspired BIRKENSTOCK Philippines’ partnership with the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Promotions Board for “The Philippines By Foot”—a campaign that encourages Filipinos to rediscover the country’s rich history and culture one step at a time.

The Philippines By Foot
Grounded in BIRKENSTOCK’s German orthopedic heritage, the campaign invites people to rethink how they move while discovering the stories embedded in the country’s landscapes and heritage sites. Participants are encouraged to move as the body was designed to—balanced, supported, and completely at ease.
The journey began at Kilometer Zero in Rizal Park, where participants embarked on a contemplative walk through some of Manila’s most significant landmarks. From the solemn grounds commemorating Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom to the tranquil Chinese and Japanese Gardens before arriving at the National Museum complex, each stop offered a chance to reflect on the nation’s history at an unhurried pace.
That mindful walk was only the beginning.
The following morning, the campaign continued with a community walk led by Just Walk PH through the historic streets of Intramuros. As participants passed the centuries-old walls, paused at Plaza de Roma, and admired the façade of Manila Cathedral, they were reminded that history is often best experienced slowly—and on foot.
BIRKENSTOCK Museo
The Henry Hotel was transformed into BIRKENSTOCK Museo, a gallery celebrating the Filipino community that has embraced the brand through the years. The exhibition served as a living archive of nearly 50 local wearers, documenting the exact sandal models they continue to wear and the many years those pairs have accompanied them through daily life.

The portraits highlighted both ordinary and extraordinary journeys—from everyday commuters to cultural icons such as Apo Whang-Od, Chef Jordy Navarra, and Edward Sibunga of e/lou furniture studio. Together, they illustrated how a single pair of sandals can quietly become part of a person’s story.
Stepping Into History and Culture
The Philippines By Foot extends far beyond a series of community walks. It is an invitation for Filipinos to engage more intentionally with the places beneath their feet and rediscover the stories woven into their own neighborhoods.

Inspired by the experiences of local communities, the movement will continue partnering with provinces across the country to create more walking experiences that encourage people to explore and appreciate their home regions with renewed curiosity. In doing so, participants become active contributors to preserving and celebrating the country’s shared cultural heritage.
