Patis Tesoro has spent her entire life keeping Filipiniana alive, and Filipino fashion is better for it. Now, the designer has been honored with official recognition as a National Artist for Design in the Philippines.
It’s a well-deserved title. Tesoro has always turned her dedication to Filipiniana into action. She helped revive piña production in the 1980s before expanding her advocacy to natural dyes, handweaving, embroidery, and other traditional crafts across the country. Along the way, she taught and worked with generations of Filipino artisans, many of them women.

Decades later, she hasn’t stopped. In 2025, Tesoro explored a partnership with TESDA to provide skills training for local weavers and embroiderers. She also collaborated with the Zonta Club of Alabang for Filipiniana Is Forever, a benefit show that raised funds for the organization’s programs for women and children. And if there were ever any doubt about her enduring enthusiasm, Tesoro created one hundred looks for the collection.
You can see that energy in Tesoro herself. For a designer with such a formidable legacy, she remains wonderfully playful, quick with a joke, and never too serious about her own stature. There’s an infectious joy in the way she talks about fashion.
Tesoro welcomes younger designers who borrow from her ideas, too. She has little interest in guarding what she created if sharing it means Filipiniana can live through another generation. As she put it herself last year when she unveiled Filipiniana Is Forever:
“Filipiniana is forever for as long as we have a country called the Philippines.”
