Twenty years can be a lifetime or a beginning. But for Filipino designer Jor-El Espina, it is the span of his odyssey in the industry he lives and breathes. As he marks two decades, Espina faces the road ahead with a firm intention. In his upcoming “20 Design Anthologies,” each thread tells a story. First, as a boy from Iloilo who saw the world in texture. Then, as a creative who found belonging through beauty. But perhaps, most importantly, there’s a story of a man who believes fashion can—and must—serve something larger than itself.

A Year of Creative Revelations

Espina’s journey has been no quiet affair. It has been an unfurling scroll of events that peel back the layers of his genius. It began in August 2024 with “Adaptation,” a capsule collection that reimagined his archives for the modern wearer. Here, art-deco geometry danced with the inherent grace of Philippine fabrics.

Then came the tangible manifestation of his growth: the December 2024 opening of his vibrant 120-square-meter atelier in Makati. This was envisioned as his immersive space for collaboration and innovation. It cemented his physical footprint while pursuing his creative philosophy.

March 2025 saw him pirouetting into a new domain, lending his vision to Ballet Philippines’ “Ang Panaginip”. Designing for movement and motion, he found a profound resonance between the storytelling of dance and the narrative power of fashion. It was a harmonious pas de deux of artistry.

But perhaps the most poignant chapter leading to the grand finale was August 2025’s “Heirloom” at ArteFino, a collection born from the mentorship and collaborative spirit of the inimitable Patis Tesoro. To immerse himself in the universe of the Grand Dame of Philippine Fashion was both an honor and a homecoming. Espina found a kindred maximalist spirit in Tesoro. The exchange pushed Espina to hone his craft further.

A Maximalist’s Deeper Purpose

Twenty years can breed a certain courage. Espina’s “20 Design Anthologies” promises sixty stunning looks. “I consider this collection as my playground,” he muses, inviting everyone into the vibrant landscape of his unbridled imagination. Expect to be dazzled by jewel tones and metallics that evoke an “old-world glamour”—a rich aesthetic that, he reveals, has always been his heart’s inclination. Techniques will abound, all explored with renewed vigor by his skilled team.

His anniversary show, however, transcends personal accomplishment. It will be unveiled during the Bahaghari Charity Gala, a partnership with the Philippine Financial and Inter-industry Pride (PFIP).

The PFIP, a vanguard for LGBTQ inclusion in the workplace, is committed to dismantling systemic barriers and empowering underrepresented youth. The funds raised from this gala will directly support their Rainbow Youth Academy Scholarship Program, providing critical access to higher education for LGBTQ individuals. Espina, as a proud member of this community, understands the transformative power of education and the critical need for safe, inclusive spaces.

In the end, one could say that Jor-El Espina’s greatest creation yet is a loving gesture extended beyond himself. It’s his sincere way of honoring where he comes from and who he stands beside. And as he celebrates twenty years of craft, he hopes that his work will open doors for others to follow.
