EXCLUSIVE: Gabbi Garcia Brought the Precolonial Barangay to Miss Universe Philippines 2025

At the finale of Miss Universe Philippines 2025, host Gabbi Garcia delivered not just lively spiels but also five breathtaking looks. From gold armor to deep violet mystique and sparkling beadwork, the actress embodied the archetypes of a precolonial barangay, celebrating Filipino culture and heritage on a national stage.

MEGA caught up with stylist Leanne Ledesma to uncover the stories and craftsmanship behind these meaningful creations. Together with Steven Coralde, the two drew inspiration from the distinct archetypes that made up the precolonial barangay: the Datu, Babaylan, Warrior, Artisan, and Farmer. “These archetypes served as the foundation for pieces created by our talented Filipino designers, who reimagined them through a modern lens,” Ledesma shared. The result was a contemporary interpretation, where tradition met innovation onstage.

A symbol of power and prestige, the Datu gown paid homage to the influence of gold in ancient Philippine society. The look featured a sculpted 3D corset adorned with crystals, its halter neckline doubling as a statement necklace. A black, vase-shaped skirt beautifully framed the ensemble, with even the slit at the back lined in gold. The look was completed with gold drop earrings, matching cuffs on each wrist, and her hair twisted into a sleek bun—exuding the commanding presence of a leader.

Next came Babaylan, channeling goddess-like regality. The flowing purple ensemble embodied mysticism, divinity, and feminine strength with its plunging neckline, graceful draping, and delicate beadwork. Without the need for jewelry, Garcia radiated the essence of the divine feminine.

Inspired by Philippine daggers, Warrior showcased intricate metal beadwork on a bodice shaped like modern armor. Beneath it, a dreamy white dress hugged her figure, creating a striking contrast. On the Miss Universe Philippines stage, Garcia embodied a warrior bathed in moonlight—powerful, graceful, and ready to conquer.

A handmade masterpiece, the Artisan couture look was a two-piece ensemble spotlighting traditional banig weaving in an off-shoulder bandeau top. Its structured texture was softened by a rust-copper silk skirt, creating an elegant balance. Delicate pearl earrings and a matching necklace added a touch of femininity. Seamlessly blending indigenous craftsmanship with high fashion, Garcia paid tribute to the heart and artistry of the Filipino artisan.

A soft reimagination of the Balintawak, the Farmer gown paid homage to the country’s agricultural roots with hues that echoed rice and wheat fields. The design featured multi-textured piña, evoking the richness of harvest landscapes. With its turtleneck, billowing sleeves, and mermaid skirt, the gown captured a sense of structured grace—turning Garcia into a modern muse for the Filipino farmer.

The Fashion Chameleon

The duo was passionate about transforming these archetypes into contemporary fashion moments. “The concept was to reinterpret these traditional roles in a way that feels fresh, contemporary, and relevant. She loved it right away and was excited to bring it to life,” Ledesma recounted.

Now in their second year styling the Miss Universe Philippines host, Ledesma described Garcia as a “fashion chameleon”—always open to bold concepts and new fashion narratives. “One of the most memorable parts was the hustle of changing into five different looks with such a short lead time,” the stylist recalled fondly. The adrenaline and high energy of the night made the experience unforgettable for both the creative team and the actress, a testament to the trust Garcia places in her collaborators.
