There is a first time for everything. For Alex Eala, the latest arrived at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027, where she sat front row at Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and Calvin Klein. The setting may have been unfamiliar territory, but Eala is hardly a newcomer to attention. After a run of landmark victories that has pushed her further into the international spotlight, the 21-year-old tennis star is finding herself watched from another front row altogether: fashion.

Dressed in a look from Tory Burch’s Resort 2027 collection, Eala wore a vivid coral-red tailored blazer with a sharp, elongated cut and dark button detailing, layered over a blue-and-white striped shirt. Relaxed khaki trousers softened the precision of the jacket, while a compact brown bag and black pointed shoes completed the look. The contrast mirrors Burch’s own Resort 2027 sensibility, which placed saturated color, practical tailoring, vintage references, and eccentric details in unexpected company.

“I’m so excited, I’m a little nervous,” she admitted in an interview, acknowledging the formidable names gathered around her and the thrill of being included among them. The nerves are understandable. This is an athlete accustomed to Centre Court, not the front row. Yet she has been watching the fashion industry for some time—and increasingly, they have been looking back.

Game, Set, They’re Each Other’s Match

Eala has spoken openly about her growing affection for fashion, describing it as a space where personality can come through in much the same way it does in sport. Her relationship with clothes is still developing, she says, and she remains candid about learning the customs of an industry that operates according to rules rather different from tennis.

Sports demands physical endurance, but fashion requires a different sort of stamina. When asked to compare the two, Eala playfully suggested coming back after her first fashion week before making a final assessment. The answer carries the easy humor that has become part of her public persona: confident enough to enter the room, self-aware enough to admit she is still figuring it out.

Anna Wintour has already singled out Eala as a young athlete showing a genuine interest in fashion, placing her within a broader generation of sportswomen using clothes as another means of expression.  Eala herself has described her style as “girly” and “edgy,” while acknowledging that she is still finding her way toward a wardrobe that feels entirely her own.

And her fashion game, it seems, is already getting some serious court time. At Michael Kors’s Spring/Summer 2027 show, Eala found herself seated between Wintour and John D. Idol, CEO of Capri Holdings, making easy conversation as though the front row were another court to hold her own. She arrived in a black A-line Michael Kors Collection dress, its clean silhouette softened by delicate floral appliqués.

A Filipino Girl in New York

For all the attention surrounding Eala’s international profile, her fashion choices remain tethered to home.

Filipino culture has become a recurring reference in her wardrobe, whether through a modern Filipiniana, a sampaguita detail, or clothing by Filipino designers. The tennis star has explained that incorporating Filipino elements into what she wears allows her to pay tribute to her roots while choosing pieces she genuinely finds beautiful.

She has spoken with the same enthusiasm about Filipino food, declaring her love for sinigang while holding her ground on the enduring pleasures of adobo and lumpia. It is a patriotism that can fit inside a packed suitcase and travel from Manila to Madrid, London, Wimbledon, or New York.

Fashion has become another way to carry that familiarity abroad. At the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, Eala wore a modern Filipiniana designed by her uncle, Rhett Eala, recalling that she felt like a princess in it. On court, the sampaguita has appeared in accessories created for her by Nike, including a hair tie at Wimbledon and a custom visor carrying the Filipino phrase Kapag lumago, hindi na hihinto

Before the NYFW S/S27 shows, Eala wore an orange halter top with light-gold embellishment alongside embroidered trousers from Filipino designer Carlene Zervoulakos’ Atelier Carlene. The look quickly joined the growing catalogue of Eala appearances that have put Filipino design before an international audience.

From Centre Court to the Front Row

Eala’s fashion story is still in its opening chapter, so there is no need to declare her a fully formed style authority, nor is it right to judge her negatively after one fashion week appearance. The intrigue lies in watching the wardrobe develop alongside the career: a Filipiniana here, a sampaguita there, an emerging Filipino label by her legs, then a Calvin Klein show with the minimalist brand’s silver The One clutch from the S/S26 collection, a statement piece inspired by the original CK One bottle, courtesy of Creative Director Veronica Leoni.

In fashion, she gets another language with which to communicate personality, heritage, confidence, humor, and taste. The court has taught her how to perform under scrutiny. Fashion helps her decide what that scrutiny gets to see.

In her first New York Fashion Week, it’s a seat in the front row. If Eala is still learning fashion’s rules, the fashion industry seems increasingly interested in watching what she does when she starts breaking them.
