Why The End of Oak Street Should Be on Your Movie Radar
In development for years, The End of Oak Street is a sci-fi action thriller about the Platt family who live on, you guessed it, Oak Street. One day, a mysterious cosmic event rips the area out of suburbia and transports their neighborhood to an unknown place. Soon, the family discovers that they’ve entered the fight for their lives when they encounter dinosaurs hunting for their next meal, and they must stick together to navigate their unrecognizable surroundings.
Right off the bat, the film’s premise leaves a lot of questions about where exactly Oak Street went. Did it travel back in time to the land of the dinosaurs? Are they on a different planet? And how will the Platt family, and the entire street for that matter, get home? It’s these questions that are hoped to be answered as the mystery slowly unravels.
Of course, having the neighborhood face off against dinosaurs adds the inherent big-budget thrill and action as the protagonists run across the screen while being chased by the terrifying prehistoric creatures and fight for their survival. There’s also a dose of nostalgia behind The End of Oak Street as it takes place in the 1980s, so the costumes, production design, and sets harken back to family life in the suburbs during the era. In a way, it’s a scary movie, but the kind that’s accessible for even non-horror fans.
At the heart of the movie, though, is the Platt family, with Anne Hathaway playing the family matriarch Denise Platt. Hathaway has been on an impressive run this 2026 so far, and her latest film is one of her most interesting of the year in setting and premise. Also, seeing the Oscar-winning actress return to the action genre, something she’s excelled in before in The Dark Knight Rises, is a welcome development. Joining Hathaway is Ewan McGregor, who plays Greg Platt for their first on-screen role together as a couple. The talent behind the camera is equally as impressive, as The End of Oak Street is directed by David Robert Mitchell, who also directed the indie horror hit It Follows. Notably, Hathaway asked to have lunch with the director after seeing It Follows to tell him she wanted to work with him. After Mitchell showed Hathaway the film’s script years later, she immediately said yes.
J.J. Abrams, meanwhile, serves as a producer. He’s no stranger to working on the biggest blockbusters, but Abrams also has experience delivering suspenseful sci-fi mystery projects with an emotional core, such as Cloverfield, Super 8, and Lost. Finally, Oscar winner Michael Giacchino is behind the movie’s music. He recently composed the music for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, so you can count on the score to deliver sweeping orchestral tracks that enhance the scenes.
In a time when cinema-going has become a special event, The End of Oak Street promises to go beyond the typical as a big-screen thrill ride that marries sci-fi action with mystery through the lens of family dynamics.
