Eve Ridley in Supergirl

There are a lot of characters introduced in Supergirl, and one of the most notable is Ruthye Marie Knoll, played by Ridley. Hailing from the Danastia Clan, this headstrong and scrappy alien farmhand is on a revenge quest to get back at the people who killed her family, namely the movie’s main antagonist, Krem of the Yellow Hills. This leads her to meet Kara Zor-El, or Supergirl (Milly Alcock), to request her help to get the justice she’s looking for. Essentially, Ruthye is the one who sets the events of the film in motion.

Despite looking like a small young girl, Ruthye brings youthfulness and depth to her commitment in achieving her revenge quest. Even with losing everything she loves, Ruthye still has hope for a better future, which makes her both a friend and the opposite of Supergirl, who has been through similar tragedies as Ruthye. Over the course of their adventure, the two will clash but also learn new things about themselves, especially when it comes to navigating loss and sorrow.

“Ruthye’s quite upright and very composed and put together, but then Kara… she’s got that sort of energy where she doesn’t care what she says and she’s using a lot of slang language and it’s all really casual,” says Ridley. “You can see the difference between them and how it clashes. I think that’s really funny.”

Ridley, who is 14 years old and turning 15 this December, went through multiple rounds of auditions for the critical role, and it reached a point where she was unsure if she would get it. But when the call arrived, and she heard the good news, she was overjoyed. “You’re so happy and proud of yourself, but then it also takes a while to sink in. That’s when I read the comic and I did lots of research about Supergirl and her iconic look and the difference between Kara and Supergirl.” That preparation also extended to two months of stunt training for the role.

What Is Eve Ridley’s Background and Acting Career Before Supergirl?

Born in Tyneside, England, Ridley gets her Filipino heritage from her grandmother, who was from and grew up in the Philippines. Her mother is half Filipino, while her dad is British. In an interview, Ridley shared that she has yet to visit the Philippines, but would love to in the future, as well as learn Tagalog to be able to communicate with her family in the country. She has also tasted Filipino food before, specifically buko pie, after one of her school friends made her try it.

Supergirl marks Ridley’s movie debut and first Hollywood blockbuster at that. But the young actress is no stranger to appearing in globally recognized IP. She made her acting debut voicing Wendy Wolf in Peppa Pig. She then played a young Éponine on the UK tour of Les Misérables in 2022. She made her live-action series debut in an episode of the BBC One medical soap opera Casualty. Ridley also appeared as a recurring character in the Netflix series 3 Body Problem and in season 4 of The Witcher as young Nimue. Another day, another young actress with Filipino heritage on the rise in the global spotlight.
