That was the choice Mika Salamanca had laid out for herself in 2024. Years of building an online empire as one of the country’s most recognizable vloggers had been overshadowed by controversy: a 2020 arrest in Hawaii for breaking quarantine protocols, followed by a wave of public backlash that left her confidence in pieces.
Even after slowly re-entering the public eye through acting in Maging Sino Ka Man, Walang Matigas na Pulis sa Matinik na Misis, and Bubble Gang, she couldn’t shake the feeling of starting from zero.
“I wasn’t always strong,” she admits. “Nanggaling ako sa mga iyak na ako lang nakakakita, iyak na hindi ko sinasabi sa iba [Sometimes I come out from crying nobody sees, tears that I don’t let anybody know].” By the time Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition came calling, she knew it was either the turning point she desperately needed or the end of her career in the Philippines altogether. “Kung hindi ako makapasok [If I didn’t get in], maybe this industry is not for me,” the Sang’gre actress says. “Pero rock bottom na ako, wala na akong ibababa pa [I couldn’t get any lower].”
Inside the PBB house, she took the risk of showing her unfiltered self. It paid off with her raw honesty. After four months, she walked out as one-half of the Big Winner duo and, for the first time in years, felt certain of her worth. “Mas naging self-secure ako. Mas nakilala ko sarili ko, pati yung mga taong dapat pahalagahan ko sa buhay [I was more secure with myself. I got to know who I was better, even the people who I value in life],” she reflects.
Her first act after that win spoke volumes. Mika donated her entire P1 million cash prize to Duyan ni Maria, a Pampanga-based non-profit for underprivileged children. It was proof that the woman once haunted by past mistakes was now choosing to use her platform for something bigger than herself.
Now, she’s gearing up to release her debut album in September, songs she began writing at 23, each carrying pieces of the growth, reckoning, and wins that brought her here. “I’m a work in progress everyday,” she says. “Lahat ng steps na gagawin ko, I’ll make sure mas makakabuti ‘yun sa lahat ng taong nasa paligid ko [I’ll make sure that every step I take would be for the good of the people around me].”
Mika knows what it’s like to fall apart in front of the world but she also knows how to stand up again, this time more sure of who she is. She’s the living proof that redemption is not always about having a perfect comeback, sometimes an honest one is enough.
