In Pursuit of Passion: Xiaomi Celebrates All Women in Tech

By

In line with International Women’s Day, Xiaomi launches their Women In Tech video that celebrates all women in the industry, even those who aspire to join the field

Tradition has ruled over our society for generations and women in typically “masculine” jobs were seen as exceptions. However, it’s beautiful how society has progressed over the years with women now finding more spaces where they can thrive without prejudice. The world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has been a predominantly male industry for years. But thanks to all the brave women who have fought for their spot at the table, the world is now becoming more accepting of a diverse workforce where men and women can flourish side by side.

In line with International Women’s Day, Xiaomi International releases their Women in Tech video that celebrates the lives of three key female figures in Xiaomi. Hoping to continuously inspire and connect with the people who have been a huge part in building and shaping the ever-growing industry of technology, the video serves as a reminder to everyone who aspires to be part of the tech industry to consistently strive to be the best versions of themselves.

Igniting success

“Growing up, I encountered a culture that viewed women as not tech-savvy, but in reality, many women are tech-minded and passionate about technology and gadgets. The world is full of talented women in tech,” Abi Go, spokesperson and keynote speaker for Xiaomi International shares. She believes there is a continuous need for an inclusive and transformative mentality when it comes to the field of technology. Women in the industry have persevered and remained passionate, which is something Abi believes to be some of the admirable qualities her fellow women possess.

Xiaomi carries on in providing a supportive environment for all of their young talents by helping in nurturing and honing their craft. By being more empathetic and understanding to the viewpoints and ideas of others, Abi perceives this as something that greatly contributes to their success. “We are constantly communicating, debating, discussing, and standing from our user’s perspectives, such as giving feedback on how we can co-develop the product better. On the marketing front, we’d take tech jargon and translate them into easy-to-understand language for our users,” she explains.

Creativity that perseveres

As the senior director of ecosystem and a tech packaging director at Xiaomi International, Chen Lu mentions how Xiaomi’s culture of being a progressive and dynamic environment stems from the diversity in the organization. She even states how having such a diverse talent pool has given them the advantage to be more collaborative and creative. “Xiaomi attracts top talents in the industry, so there is always diverse thinking around me. This allows me to look at problems from different perspectives. For example, Xiaomi engineers will analyze problems from angles that I have not considered before,” Chen explains.

Xiaomi’s commitment to being a progressive organization is also seen in their continuous pursuits of going beyond what is expected in creativity in the tech industry. Chen Lu even shares her first-hand experience of this when it comes to her packaging design process. “Before joining Xiaomi, I had limited ideas about creativity. I thought creativity was only about creating new visual experiences. At Xiaomi, I learned that creativity is also about solving practical problems, designing new experiences for users, and using design solutions to improve their daily life,” she states.

Turning a vision into reality

Xiaomi has always had inclusivity in mind as they constantly strive to break down barriers in the tech industry. Yi Yan, General Manager of Shanghai Regional Headquarters describes this as a way for everyone around the globe to experience a more enjoyable life by giving access to innovative technologies. “This mission drives us to work together towards creating a better world,” she says. Because this mindset further promotes diversity in the field, it is also reflected in Xiaomi’s organizational structure as they present more and more opportunities for women.

Yi Yan strongly believes in the importance of having “a supportive environment for all career stages” is essential in fostering creativity and professional growth for women in tech. And with the collaborative nature integrated in Xiaomi’s management style, Yi Yan explains that “this creates a mutually beneficial learning environment.”

Seeing women flourishing in the world of technology can make every little girl feel empowered to reach for their dreams and pursue their passions. As our world continues to move forward, may every woman find their own space in our society wherein they can just be their most authentic selves.
