Your work straddles beauty and fashion, what’s one thing you’ve learned about translating creativity into something both wearable and editorial?

If I’ve learned anything about translating creativity into nail art, it’s that there really are no rules. There is a market for everything and such a broad spectrum of taste and style in the world. If you can dream it, you can wear it, no matter how simple or elaborate the story is.

Steph describes her work as something that is minimal yet impactful, but she is not afraid to experiment, "When you do push boundaries, the emotional and creative payoff is huge."

You’ve talked about adapting your style to editorial and celebrity clients, but how do you balance your personal voice with each client’s vision?

When I go to work, I really try to put aside my personal feelings. Working on a photoshoot is about the vision as a whole, rather than just my opinion as the nail artist. When on set, there are always discussions with stylists, creative directors, and photographers. Quite often, the talent doesn’t make glam decisions on their own! I’m trusted as the “nail expert,” but it’s a collaborative experience. I want my contribution to enhance the vision, not detract from it.

Nail art is a niche discipline, but one that makes a huge impact. How do you decide when to push creative boundaries and when to keep things minimal?

The creative discussions with the other artists on set really help draw that line. A lot of my work leans toward minimal, yet impactful. Personally, I’m probably more of a minimalist in nail style too. I’d wear sheer pink almond nails all the time if I weren’t the one doing nails! Since nail direction on set is often more minimal, I typically don’t push boundaries unless invited to. Paradoxically, I think that’s also why I love being challenged with people who love nail art and want to play! That’s why I love clients who want to play. Events like the Met Gala are a chance to go bold and audacious. When you do push boundaries, the emotional and creative payoff is huge.

Name three non-negotiable products in your kit

This is not going to sound the most exciting, but my non-negotiables are truly the basics: A nail file because even if you don’t have clippers, you can still take down the length, smoothen and shape the nails to your preference. Probably rubbing alcohol or a sanitary nail prep system. Cuticle oil. A customary use of cuticle oil will do more for your nails than any other product.
