Growth is often shaped as much about the moments that didn’t go according to plan. Looking back on her journey in Philippine cinema, Bela Padilla recalls the projects that brought her joy and the people who inspired her—along with her frustrations. “All these moments contributed to the artist and person I am today,” she shares with MEGA.

Her performances in films such as 100 Tula Para Kay Stella (2017), Meet Me in St. Gallen (2018), Mañanita (2019), and On Vodka, Beers, and Regrets (2020) earned both commercial success and critical acclaim. Among those milestones, one project stands apart: her directorial debut. Produced during the pandemic while she was privately navigating an autoimmune disorder, 366 challenged her in ways she never anticipated. Yet despite the setbacks, she describes the experience with fondness: “In 366, I realized how far my dreams could take me. It took me to Cappadoccia, Turkey for a few weeks of filming alone and to a deeper place in myself that’s not only disciplined, but hungrier than ever to keep working on films that resonate with my audience.”
Simply put, Padilla is deeply committed to her craft. Preparation remains central to her process. She studies her scripts, arrives early, and spends time learning from crew members behind the scenes. This technical knowledge, she says, strengthens her performances and broadens her understanding of filmmaking as a whole. “It also stretches my already huge reservoir of patience, since being on set is akin to being in a circus,” Padilla admits.
Perhaps because of those experiences, Padilla approaches empowerment differently than most. With no shortcuts and no handouts, she recognizes that the traditional definition can be limiting. “Empowerment implies strength, a loud, booming voice, a figure to follow,” she reflects. “But I chose strength in my softness and my ability to believe. Empowerment can’t work for everybody in a system and a country that favors the few.” So instead, she values agency—choosing the path that’s best for you.
Bela Padilla sees the entirety of her art with clarity, which allows her to be decisive in motion. “I’m intentional in a sense that I don’t want to sway a person’s ideology to match mine because the world would be so boring if we were all alike. My only wish and maybe purpose here is to let you forget everything happening in your life for the two hours you spend with me in the cinema. If I can keep on doing that, I’ll be more than happy,” she concludes.
