Two decades in fashion isn’t a number—it’s a language. And few speak it as fluently, or as fabulously, as Jor-El Espina. As he marks his twentieth year in the industry, the designer stages not a retrospective, but a revelry for his brand—20 Design Anthologies, a collection that celebrates Filipino craftsmanship, maximalist imagination, and the beauty of living out loud.

“It’s very much like my diary as a designer,” he shares, in a collection written in fabric, sequins, and memory. The passage of time layers the past with new patterns, new color, and new courage, and his twenty anthologies turn the pages of a long love affair with garments that shimmer with the designer’s instinct for excess done exquisitely.
Inside the Mind of a Maximalist
Espina’s aesthetic has always leaned toward the expressive—the ornate embroidery, the high volume, the shimmer that dares to catch the light twice. With 20 Design Anthologies, he takes that instinct and turns it into philosophy.
“Maximalism is about emotion—layers of texture, culture, and memory. In Filipino design, it’s our way of storytelling; a celebration of our richness, our colors, and our joyful excess that speaks of identity and pride.”

The collection is a riot of texture and tone: jewel hues meet metallic gleams; fringe, corsetry, and mother-of-pearl paillettes. It’s maximalism as a narrative where silence was never part of its vocabulary.

From Iloilo to the World
Espina’s trajectory mirrors that of Filipino design itself: intimate in origin, yet expansive in spirit. His work has long championed handwoven fabrics, embroidery, and local craft, but always with a modern cadence.
In 20 Design Anthologies, those roots find new ways—piña meets metallic silk, barong becomes sculpture, and the Filipiniana form moves from formality to fantasy. It’s not reinvention for the sake of relevance, but a continuation toward discovery, where the designer knows where he stands, but never stops moving.

“Each chapter was shaped by people and moments that moved me—from my mentors and muses to the artisans I’ve worked with,” he says. “The most transformative entries are the ones where I learned that design is not just about clothes, but about connection and purpose.”
Glamour Is Giving
Beneath the shimmer lies sincerity. Espina’s twentieth year in fashion isn’t only a personal milestone, but also a platform. Partnering with the Philippine Financial and Inter-Industry Pride (PFIP), the collection lends its color to a cause close to the designer’s heart: supporting education for underrepresented LGBTQIA+ youth.
It means remembering where I came from and helping create space for others to dream freely,” the designer says. “This milestone is not just about me—it’s about opening doors for the next generation to live and love authentically.”

It’s a gesture that’s always been in character. Espina has always designed for those who wish to be seen—his clothes, after all, stand out and amplify. Identity thrives in visibility, and it’s the acknowledgment that every thread of success must lead somewhere meaningful.
Still Turning Heads
There’s poetry in the way Espina talks about his process. “Everything begins with emotion and instinct,” he shares. “I don’t design with a formula—I design from feeling. This collection was deeply personal, guided by gratitude, memory, and the desire to honor everyone who’s been part of my 20-year journey.”
“I consider this collection as my playground,” he says—and indeed, 20 Design Anthologies feels like a designer looking to the joy of creation. The lineup reads like a maximalist’s dream journal: barrel pants paired with diaphanous tunics, embroidered serpentine skirts, corseted tops with sculpted hips, and tulip skirts looking like cathedral windows.

In many ways, this collection is both a celebration and a self-portrait. It captures Espina’s twin devotions—to craft and to community—and threads them together in a narrative that is as radiant as it is grounded.
Two decades on, Jor-El Espina remains what he has always been: a designer of movement, of emotion, of meaning. 20 Design Anthologies is his standing ovation to Filipino design itself.
