The Art of Big Reveals

It wouldn’t be the MET Gala without a theatrical reveal. Each year, at least one star delivers a dramatic wardrobe switch that keeps audiences glued in anticipation. This year was no exception. In many ways, these transformations are reminiscent of the spirit of drag performances—and wasn’t it RuPaul who said that we are all born naked and the rest is drag?

Singer Dua Lipa arrived cloaked in a billowing organza cape. She shed it at the entrance, unveiling a black sequin tweed jacket dusted with crystals. She stripped her jacket off again, revealing a backless chiffon gown adorned with delicate crystals and wisps of feathers from Chanel. Showstopper Janelle Monáe took dandyism to the next level with an optical illusion overcoat. Once shrugged off, she revealed a sharp blazer and tailored skirt, divided into contrasting panels of black, white, and bold red—a thoroughly modern, theatrical take on Black dandyism with the help of Thom Browne and Paul Tazewell. Joining the list of dramatic surprises was Damson Idris, who initially arrived in a racer tracksuit and bejeweled helmet. Rip open the tracksuit, and he unveiled a striking three-piece suit in deep red. One side with a plaid motif, the other clean and minimalist.

White Monochrome

Monochrome tailoring never fails to make a statement, but there’s something undeniably striking about an all-white look. Clean, sharp, and quietly commanding, these suits offered a fresh, ethereal take on dandy elegance.

Zendaya, Anna Sawai, Lewis Hamilton, and Kerry Washington stunned in all-white ensembles that glowed against the blue carpet. Proof that sometimes the simplest palette can deliver the loudest statement.

Pantless Suits

This year, the women said that dandyism isn’t limited to trousers. In fact, they proved that refined tailoring can extend far beyond classic menswear—enter tailored bodysuits.

BLACKPINK Lisa made a dazzling MET Gala debut in a shimmering Louis Vuitton blazer, lace bodysuit, and tights—an alluring take on the dress code. Sabrina Carpenter also ditched the pants, opting for a burgundy tuxedo-style bodysuit. It was certainly a daring statement for the pop star. Rapper Doja Cat embraced the ‘80s in a Marc Jacobs pinstriped pantless powersuit. Featuring dramatic shoulderpads, an ocelot-print bustier, and leather kiki boots, she certainly didn’t miss out on the fun and theatrics of dandyism.

Head-Turning Hats

The simple hat became a defining accessory in Black tailoring, top hats especially. There was no shortage of them, from short top hats to dramatic, wide-brimmed feather creations.

BLACKPINK Jennie and Lupita Nyong’o’s compact top hats, despite their size, added great elements to their ensembles. Aurora James’ headpiece wasn’t only a sculptural showstopper. Her tulle and mesh gele was also an homage to Yoruba culture, transforming tradition to couture. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Diana Ross created a buzz with an extravagant feather hat.

Bejeweled Brooches

Nothing complements a sharp suit like an ornate brooch—or five. This year, attendees weren’t afraid to add a little sparkle and pizzazz to their tailored looks.

Anna Wintour, Cardi B, and Sarah Snook opted for the elegance of a single statement brooch. Teyana Taylor upped the ante with three. Joey King, on the other hand, went to the maximalist route, pinning her ensemble from sleeve to pant hem.

Power Wielding Canes

More than a simple walking aid, the cane became a statement of power and a symbol for cultural resistance in Black dandyism. They command attention and represent refined style and individuality.

Embodying power on the carpet was Teyana Taylor, whose cane matched the red of her suit, as if her ensemble wasn’t powerful and impressionable enough. Model Imaan Hammam suited up in a classic black and white with a coordinating cane. American model Jasmine Tookes, in an all-white ensemble, decided to pair her look with a black cane, a simple yet striking nod to elegance and authority.

Propwork

Who said props aren’t accessories? Much like bags, hats, and canes, props add another element to their ensembles.

Pop icon Madonna and rapper Doechii lit up the blue carpet with cigars between their teeth. They’re not only simple props but a classic symbol of affluence, rebellion, and dandy sophistication. A small touch, but an unforgettable statement. Props also must be given to Andre 3000, who went big with a piano strapped to his back and trash bags in his hands.

Big Evening Bags

Tiny clutches are standard fare at grand events. This time, guests carried big day bags to an evening event. This was their way of paying tribute to the true dandies who went about their day, stylishly carrying briefcases.

BLACKPINK Lisa paired her pantless suit with a black Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandoulière 20. Rapper Lauryn Hill debuted at the gala in a butter yellow suit accessorized with a cerulean Hermés Kelly bag. In true dandy fashion, Janelle Monáe completed her look with a structured Thom Browne Mrs. Thom Junior Bag—the chic, modern equivalent of a gentleman’s briefcase.

This year’s MET Gala theme spotlighted a cultural legacy long overdue for recognition. Black tailoring’s history of rebellion, personal expression, and emphasis on artistry didn’t go amiss, honored through sharp suits and meaningful nods to its origins. With dramatic reveals, crisp monochrome looks, and powerful props, Black dandyism was finally, deservedly, center stage.
