We’re all craving a little whimsy these days—and Mave is making a strong case that it can, in fact, be bought. Through detachable charms inspired by vintage treasures, the Filipino label transforms classic footwear into something playful, expressive, and distinctly personal.

As Mave steadily gains traction, MEGA talks to Filipina-German entrepreneur Cara Wieneke, the one-woman team behind the brand, about creating footwear that celebrates individuality and modern femininity.

A Reflection of Personality

Mave began with a fascination for vintage fashion. Drawn to pieces that carried character and individuality, Wieneke often found herself searching for shoes she couldn’t easily find elsewhere. “I would constantly come across these shoes that I really liked, but had no idea where to find them,” the founder shared. “So I thought, why not try making them for myself?”

What started as a personal project soon evolved into a full-fledged brand. Today, Wieneke remains a one-woman team, overseeing everything from design and production to marketing and modeling. Along the way, she realized she wasn’t alone in her search for timeless pieces with personality.

Rather than forcing wearers to choose between understated and expressive, Wieneke designed Mave’s detachable charms to offer both. The concept emerged from her own approach to dressing—one that appreciates statement pieces but also values versatility. “I love statement pieces, but I also like classic styles. And I needed something wearable for every day. So to do that, I wanted a shoe that could do both,” she explained.

For Wieneke, fashion has always been a reflection of identity—a belief that ultimately shaped Mave’s design philosophy. “The detachable charms allow people to personalize their shoes and make them uniquely theirs. I wanted every pair to be an extension of the person wearing it—like a reflection of their personality.”

Championing Marikina Craftsmanship

Proudly made in Marikina, the brand embraces the city’s long-standing shoemaking heritage. Producing locally wasn’t simply a logistical decision for Wieneke, but an investment in an industry known for its expertise and dedication to quality. “Working closely with the shoemakers here has shaped the aspects, especially the quality and the design process of Mave,” she said.

That collaboration has reinforced her appreciation for Filipino craftsmanship. While Marikina has long been recognized as the country’s shoemaking capital, Wieneke sees an opportunity to spotlight the remarkable skill that exists within the local industry. “The skill is there, even without access to the same resources or machinery as other countries. But they can still produce high quality shoes. So I wanted to invest in the local scene and grow that industry.”

That commitment to craftsmanship also presents one of Mave’s biggest challenges. Unlike mass-produced footwear, each pair is handcrafted in small batches, requiring a production process that prioritizes quality over speed. “Every pair is handcrafted, and it’s in small batches, so creating the shoes takes time,” Wieneke said honestly. Still, maintaining that balance between personalization and quality remains central to the brand’s vision.

The Mave Woman

Every fashion brand imagines a muse. For Mave? She’s equal parts playful and self-assured. “The Mave woman is cheeky, whimsical, and fearless. She’s someone who expresses herself fully and isn’t afraid to have fun,” Wieneke reflected.

The Mave woman is multifaceted—her style shifts with her mood, and so do her shoes.

Yet the woman Mave designs for continues to evolve. As the brand grows, so does its understanding of modern femininity—one that embraces complexity rather than conformity. “Over time, I feel like she’s become more self-assured, more self-aware.”

That evolution informs the future of the brand as well. While Mave’s current offerings focus on heels and wedges, Wieneke is already looking beyond those categories, imagining pieces that can accompany women through different chapters of their lives. “As we’re looking into expanding into new categories, I’m also thinking about women who are entering into milestones in their lives,” the founder mentioned.

“Modern femininity is about being unabashedly yourself. It’s understanding that you don’t have to fit into a single niche or label.”

At its core, Mave’s philosophy is rooted in freedom, to embrace different sides of yourself without feeling confined to a single aesthetic. And that belief is reflected in every detail of the brand. Through interchangeable charms and customizable designs, Mave encourages women to approach fashion with curiosity and individuality.

“You see it in Mave’s designs—that everything is customizable and interchangeable. So someday, you’ll wear the shoe one way. Another day, you’ll wear it another way,” Wieneke explained.

In an era where personal style is increasingly individual, Mave’s appeal lies in its flexibility. The same pair can feel different from one day to the next, adapting to the wearer rather than dictating who she should be. In doing so, Wieneke creates space for self-expression—one charming shoe at a time.

Mave differentiates itself through interchangeable, detachable charms that transform a single pair of shoes into multiple style expressions. Each pair is handcrafted in small batches in Marikina, combining Filipino shoemaking heritage with a customizable, personality-driven design philosophy.

Mave shoes are handmade in Marikina, widely recognized as the Philippines’ shoemaking capital. Founder Cara Wieneke chose to produce locally as a deliberate investment in Filipino craftsmanship, citing the city’s shoemakers’ ability to produce high-quality footwear even without access to international machinery.

Mave’s detachable charms are interchangeable accessories attached to the brand’s heels and wedges, allowing wearers to swap between a minimal, classic look and a more expressive, statement style. The concept was designed so that one pair of shoes could adapt to different moods and occasions.
