Old Hollywood called, and the Oscars answered. Here’s a look at the women of Hollywood who gave bouffants, chignons, and tiara buns a grand return
A good updo always finds its way back. Just turn to the 87th Annual Oscars for proof. At the show, ‘60s-inspired hair was more a mandate than a moment, with stars like Margaret Qualley and Elle Fanning to BLACKPINK’s Lisa wearing it like a modern-day coronation. Old Hollywood hauteur is—of course—no stranger to the crimson carpet, but when did glamour last hold its head this high, this often? Ahead, beauty channeled a bygone era, and these women did it best.

Margaret Qualley

At this point, Margaret Qualley and retro hair are a cinematic pairing. For this year’s Oscars, she delivered yet another striking look—a vintage-inspired knotty updo straight out of Elizabeth Taylor’s The V.I.P.s. Wearing a black Chanel column gown, she looked right at home in a silver-screen dream.
Lisa Manoban

BLACKPINK Lisa’s first Oscars called for nothing less than a bang. And quite literally so, as the White Lotus star’s signature bangs framed a half-up, half-down bouffant—one of the ‘60s’ most infamous silhouettes. With this and her Mark Gong tuxedo dress, Hollywood seemed to be another world tour stop for Lisa.
Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o was adorned in pearls from head to hem. Her draped bun which sat mid-head was decorated with delicate pearls, echoing the 22,000 others that threaded her ivory Chanel number. Ever the sophisticated figure, the Wild Robot star walked the carpet like a modern-day Venus.
Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning’s hairdo was the talk of the town. Her sculpted chignon, seemingly drawn from the Audrey Hepburn signature and the Ann-Margaret allure, felt nothing like a reference and everything of a revival. Her hair framed her like a vintage starlet frozen in time.
Mikey Madison

Mikey Madison’s updo whispered of the ‘50s to ‘60s starlets, but the free-floating baby hairs told another story. Smooth, but not too smooth, the Anora star’s sculpted bun (and center part) played by the rules, only to bend them at the edges. She proved vintage glamour doesn’t have to be stiff.
Marissa Bode

The Wicked actress wore an old-world bun—or a ‘tiara bun’ in modern-day speak—that was fit for a queen. The updo, softened by her face-framing fringe, gave a vintage and elegant look without the stiffness, like regality with a fresh Hollywood edit.
Beauty looks at this year’s Oscars were a little ‘60s, a little now, but all the way unforgettable. This vintage hair fiasco isn’t the most novel trend we’ve seen, but it’s proof that a good updo will always hold its own.
