“BIG EMOTIONS. Emotional dressing.”
Michael Rider opens his notes for Celine S/S27 at Paris Fashion Week with feeling, alongside a straightforward expectation: clothes should “do their job.”
A job with varied descriptions, really, when every wearer sets different terms. There’s practicality to consider, but Rider is astute in understanding that personal style is instinctive. It gets the final word, even if the person can’t fully explain why they became attached to a stack of bangles or why certain pieces just “feel right.”

“Positive obsession” and “high spirits” follow in Rider’s notes, as does the freedom to head out of town. Now in his second year at Celine, he gives the wardrobe similar freedom to move. TailoringTailoringThe craft of cutting, shaping, and fitting garments, especially suits, jackets, and trousers, precisely to the body. Good tailoring relies on structure, proportion, and careful hand and machine work, andGo to Tailoring Glossary, relaxed sportswear, and printed silk can take on work and leisure within the same day without asking the wearer to assume a different character for either.
It’s a lineup worth examining at arm’s length, especially when intricate beadwork and pleats complement the chosen fabrics. The green lizard Cube Frame bag, massive hardware belt, and oversized bumblebee sunglasses? We need those. Rider has a wonderful eye for detail, right down to the toe caps of his pointed pumps.
There were plenty of famous faces to spot at the show, too. SZA, Bae Suzy, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lisa Bonet, Hannah Einbinder, Dan Levy, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Book Kasidet, SEVENTEEN, and TWS were among those in attendance, alongside Earn Earn, Gina Alice, and Qian Sun.
Rider is right to make room for big emotions. They have a funny habit of following us everywhere anyway, including into the wardrobe, where a passing fixation can become the thing we keep reaching for until it feels inseparable from how we want to look. Dressing with emotion gives those fascinations somewhere to live, and at Celine, he’s more than happy to indulge. Everyone, say thank you, Michael!
