Let’s Talk About The Four Philippine Adaptations of ‘Wuthering Heights’

Before there was Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, there first were multiple Philippine adaptations on the big and small screen.

Initially published in 1847, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is a literary classic. Whether you read it at school or your local library, the book is one of the most well-known romantic novels in the world. So, it’s no surprise that it has seen numerous adaptations over the decades. In fact, there are at least 32 known adaptations from all four corners of the world, ranging from movies to shows. And that list also includes the Philippines. Emerald Fennell’s 2026 variation on the source material may be taking over pop culture as of the moment, but before her sexually tense adaptation were at least four local adaptations starring some of the biggest names in Philippines showbiz that married the novel’s story with the sensibilities of Filipino melodrama.

Hihintayin Kita sa Langit – The OG Filipino Wuthering Heights

The first Filipino Wuthering Heights adaptation came in 1991, in which Carlos Siguion-Reyna directed this romantic drama starring then real-life couple Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta in their first film together as leads. The movie follows Gabriel, who is adopted by the wealthy Don Joaquin Salvador and lives with his two children, Carmina and Milo. Gabriel and Carmina, this version’s Heathcliff and Catherine, grow up to become close friends.

However, this spurs jealousy from Milo, this version’s Hindley. Making matters worse, Gabriel and Carmina grow distant when Milo takes over the family house, and Carmina marries Alan Illuste, the movie’s version of Edgar Linton. When Gabriel returns, he and Carmina embark on a forbidden romance filled with tension, baggage, and unresolved feelings.

This faithful adaptation tackles the main beats of the novel, including class divide, resentment, and revenge. It’s also notable for being filmed in Batanes and Villa Escudero in Tiaong, Quezon. In lieu of the sweeping vistas of the Yorkshire moors, the film uses the scenic beaches and seaside cliffs of the island of Batanes as its setting, which adds to the film’s dramatic and climactic love story. Location is actually one of the movie’s best traits in how it’s like a character in itself, with windy hilltops and antique interiors being witnesses to this doomed love story.

In 2017, the movie got a new lease on life when it was digitally restored and remastered in 4K resolution by ABS-CBN Film Restoration and Central Digital Lab.

The Promise – An Updated Remake of the Original

What’s interesting about this 2007 romantic drama directed by Mike Tuviera is that it was written by Racquel Villavicencio, the same writer who wrote the screenplay for Hihintayin Kita sa Langit. The movie is actually a remake of the original and updates the setting for a younger and more modern audience, or at least in this case, the 2000s. The young cast they went with was Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin, which marked the last film they worked on together.

The story follows Andrea and Daniel, two childhood best friends who develop feelings for each other, with a lighthouse serving as their special meeting place. But their love wasn’t meant to be, as Andrea’s older brother, Jason, forces them apart because of his jealousy, and Andrea enters a forced marriage with Antonio De Vera, the son of the family Andrea’s family works for.

The film follows the same beats one would expect from a Wuthering Heights adaptation, though with an added modern Filipino drama touch. And the movie is narrated by an old Daniel, who recounts the tragic tale to his grandkids. Fittingly enough, just as is with the 2026 adaptation of Wuthering Heights, The Promise was released on Valentine’s Day as well, February 14, 2007, to be exact.

Walang Hanggan – Wuthering Heights Turns Teleserye

Hihintayin Kita sa Langit truly served as a blueprint for those that followed because not only did it get a movie remake, but also a TV remake. This teleserye adaptation was made by ABS-CBN in 2012 and starred Coco Martin and Julia Montes in one of their first big team-ups, as well as original stars Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta.

Throughout the course of the show’s lengthy nine-month run, viewers followed Daniel and Katerina, two friends who grew up on a hacienda and developed feelings for each other, as their love story went through all kinds of challenges. The series is notable for how it expanded the original movie’s story into a drama that spanned generations, featuring Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta in key roles while also focusing on the new love story of Daniel and Katerina. As the biggest show on TV at the time, with viewership reaching as high as 40%, most Filipinos then were probably watching a teleserye take on Wuthering Heights without realizing it.

The World Between Us – A Loose Adaptation in a Modern Setting

At first glance, The World Between Us may look like a typical romantic series. But as revealed by its director, Dominic Zapata, its story is actually based on Wuthering Heights. Though it should be noted that the show isn’t a faithful adaptation and more so on taking cues from the source material through a Filipino lens, hence the modern, 21st-century urban setting.

This GMA drama from 2021 centers on Louie (Alden Richards) and Lia (Jasmine Curtis Smith), two best friends who grew up together. They feel perfect for each other, but life and other factors, such as Lia’s older brother Bryan (Tom Rodriguez), get in the way. The series follows the two as they try to make their love work despite the odds and overcome the physical and societal gap between them while asking the question of what you’re willing to do for that special someone you love.
