Under the glare of pageant lights, Miss Universe Philippines 2025 Ahtisa Manalo was a vision in white that hovered between air and divinity. Draped in an immaculate white gown by Mark Bumgarner, she seemed almost celestial, like light sculpted into human form. The gown, conceptualized in collaboration with stylist Patty Yap, was no ordinary showpiece, especially for a brand like Miss Universe. The fabric clung like prayer, the silhouette formed like grace remembered, but stayed still like faith.

Bumgarner describes the creation as “pure, elegant, crisp, and clean,” but the gown’s simplicity was a sleight of hand. Its cutouts were sharp as conviction, its structure deliberate. Beneath its architectural restraint, the gown reflected what Manalo carried within her that need not seek the crowd’s applause.
“She has this calm presence that feels like armor,” Bumgarner says. “The look mirrors that: refined, self-assured, and graceful without effort.” And in that reflection lies a portrait of the modern Filipina — a woman who no longer needs to wear her strength as armor but as light.
There’s something devotional in the way the fabric rests on the body, as if draped by intention rather than design. The gown’s rippling contours evoke the serene rhythm of waves — an homage to the Philippines’ archipelagic soul. “It’s a subtle nod to our shores and to the pearls of our own seas,” he says.

Though the look’s minimalism might appear subdued against a backdrop of sequins and volume, its attraction lies in construction. In the way it holds itself, like a statue carved by air, the drapes swirl like soft tides meeting marble. “Presence doesn’t always need volume,” Bumgarner muses. “It can come from proportion, line, and how the garment holds its shape on the body.”
“When done with intention, minimalism doesn’t fade — it stands apart. It takes confidence to be still when everyone else is trying to be loud.”

The making was a feat of craftsmanship, built on an invisible foundation that allowed it to flow as one seamless gesture. “The secret lies in the foundation,” he reveals. “We built a corseted base, then used moulage to shape the fabric directly on the body. That’s how you make it crisp, yet fluid. The inside does the heavy lifting so the outside looks effortless.”

Perhaps that’s the essence of Bumgarner’s work — a divine balance between strength and surrender. While others chase spectacle, he builds presence. While others gild, he purifies. His brand of minimalism doesn’t fold into the void, but acts through poise.
Amid Miss Universe’s orchestrated glitter, Ahtisa Manalo stood simply radiant. The gown became her halo, the draping her wings, and the moment her ascent.
