If a human heart were woven with fragments, then one can imagine that those elements must be connected to the land that shaped us, to the hands that held us, and to the stories we carry even when we travel far from home. It is this idea that pulses through ‘The Connection’—Filipino designer Ram Silva’s collection unveiled at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2026.

At the heart of ‘The Connection’ is the ancient art of Rara weaving. It is a craft carried by the women of Leon, Iloilo, whose skill and devotion have been passed through generations. For Silva, these artisans are storytellers.

“Preparing for my recent New York Fashion Week show was a deeply personal and meaningful journey,” he shares. “This collection is not only a reflection of my creative vision, but also a celebration of the powerful community of women who helped bring it to life, most especially the Baje Rara weavers from the mountains of Leon. Their ancestral craftsmanship and intricate weaving traditions were the soul of this collection.”

Every piece begins with a conversation. “Each textile carries a story, a heritage, and a connection to land and culture that I’m deeply honored to promote on an international stage,” he elaborates. “Collaborating with these women reminded me that fashion can be a powerful platform for cultural preservation, empowerment, and visibility.”

The Weight of Heritage

But translating this intimacy onto a global runway was no simple task. The intricacy of Rara weaving, steeped in time and tradition, met the urgency of a fashion calendar that rarely pauses for breath.

“Producing my collection for New York Fashion Week came with a series of challenges that tested both my creativity and resilience,” Silva admits. “Balancing the fast-paced demands of the global fashion calendar with my commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship proved especially complex. I wanted each piece to tell a deeper story rooted in heritage, while still appealing to a contemporary, international audience. Sourcing skilled artisans, ensuring quality across borders, and translating age-old techniques into modern silhouettes required constant adaptation.”

And yet, in that tension between patience and pressure, something sacred emerged. “By integrating traditional methods into a high-profile global platform, I could not only elevate the artistry behind them but also foster appreciation for their cultural significance,” he adds.

For all his thoughtful intentions about his designs, Silva is clear-eyed about the nature of the fashion world. Behind every show lies the grit of unseen labor and sleepless nights.

“Here’s the hard truth, and I won’t sugarcoat it,” he says candidly. “The fashion industry is not for the faint of heart. It’s cutthroat, demanding, and often unforgiving. ‘Follow your dreams’ sounds romantic until you’re stitching samples at 3AM or hustling through unpaid gigs just to get your name out there. That’s the reality. You need more than talent. You need thick skin, a relentless work ethic, and the kind of passion that burns even when everything around you says give up. If you’re ready for that, then go all in.”

There is, however, a distinct kind of beauty in that honesty. It’s similar to the way Silva’s words echo the same integrity that shapes his garments. Every piece in ‘The Connection’ bears the mark of someone who has endured and loved deeply enough to keep creating.

Toward Tomorrow

After the prestigious achievement of appearing on New York Fashion Week through FILIPINXT, Silva is looking outward to the world beyond, and the world within. “The next chapter is about sharing,” he says. “Taking everything we’ve crafted here in the Philippines and letting it speak to the world.”

There’s a glint of hope in his words, one that mirrors the collection’s essence. “I want to travel, and absorb new perspectives to bring Filipino design into conversations it’s long been left out of,” he continues. “It’s about bridging cultures and forming unexpected connections, while proving that where we come from is our greatest strength. The dream is no longer just mine. It’s ours. And we’re just getting started.”

In Ram Silva’s ‘The Connection’, the story is woven to lead somewhere: back to heritage, forward to hope, and always, inevitably, to the heart.
