Fashion has a cruel joke, and it’s this: the look you love most is the one you’ll never wear again. After all, how do you pull off those gigantic South Seas or that voluminous ball gown past ‘I do’? Sofia Yulo Fine Jewelry and Vania Romoff Bridal come together in a serendipitous collaboration. In this exclusive, they assert that dresses and jewels should moonlight as eveningwear, dinnerwear, and anywhere-wear, because forever shouldn’t be just a figure of speech.

The collection debuted at a bridal trunk show at the Vania Romoff boutique in Shangri-La Plaza, first for family, friends, and the close-knit SYFJ x VR bridal community, then opened to the public through September 3.

Something Blue

“This collection is really SYFJ’s first bridal collection,” founder and jewelry designer Sofia Yulo shares. “We made bridal pieces to specifically complement Vania’s ready-to-wear bridal collection. I kept that in mind in curating and designing the pieces to match.”

A closer look reveals a subtle unifier: a blue hue. Yulo built her bridal collection around the old “Something Blue” wedding tradition. However, her goal was more ambitious. Two-stone studs, a pinky ring, an anklet, even… these pieces were designed for life beyond the aisle.

Her design language and Vania Romoff’s jive with ease: classic femininity and modern edge. But beyond the design synergy lies a personal story. “I interned with her one summer! I actually wanted to be a fashion designer, and then realized, maybe not…” she laughs.

Turns out, the connection runs deeper. Yulo and her mom have been Romoff’s clients. Staying in touch after diving into jewelry design made this collaboration, turning friendship and history into a collection that brides can treasure forever.

Not Your Ordinary Bride

Romoff led us through her bridal studio, and it quickly became clear that it isn’t your typical bridal space. “You won’t see any long gowns here,” she said. “They’re all short dresses because we angle it for despedida, afterparty, dance, all that. But you know, things that you can still wear after the wedding.”

In fact, many pieces are separates, designed for the wearer to mix and match. “They’re more contemporary, but mostly still Filipiniana, because I find that there’s such a big movement towards incorporating Filipino contemporary wear—at least for our brides who are based in, say, the US and want to bring the vibe to their wedding,” she adds. “It’s easy buys, but you know it’s something you can wear past your wedding day.”

There’s harmony between their design codes, and both express it fondly. “If you look at her pieces, a lot of them are vintage-inspired but also at the same time not dated,” Romoff says of Yulo’s designs. “They’re something a younger women can wear and not feel like it was picked up from her grandma’s closet. So I feel like, in the same way, my designs are rooted in classic-contemporary, but not too avant-garde.”

Timeless, yet never stiff. Modern, but not at all fleeting. It’s the Yulo-Romoff magic. “Like a Taylor Swift song… it’ll never go out of style,” Romoff laughs.
