The Art of Aging Gratefully As Seen On Tina Ocampo

At 64, style icon and former supermodel Tina Ocampo has conceded that, while there are now countless technological advances that promise to stave off aging, she’s not willing to put herself through the excessive cosmetic procedures or rigorous rigmarole that modern society has in store for those in constant pursuit of youthful beauty

When Tina Ocampo smiles, she does so wholeheartedly. It’s a smile that takes over her entire face, stretching her mouth from ear to ear and revealing a tiny dimple just beneath the right side of her lower lip. It’s the kind of smile many women in their mature years instinctively try to temper, particularly in photographs, fearing it might reveal too much: the natural lines of aging, the deepening crow’s feet that fan out from the corners of the eyes or the subtle creases around the nose.

In a beauty landscape that’s saturated with headlines about the next best antidote to aging, Tina chooses to gracefully navigate the passage of time without resorting to excessive cosmetic procedures or seemingly harmless clinical treatments that can lead to manic obsession

But Tina remains unabashed. She just smiles. A Stab at Natural Beauty

Instead, Tina has come to rely on more traditional and natural rituals, such as acupuncture, to keep her skin as plump and radiant as possible. The theory behind cosmetic acupuncture is simple: needles are strategically placed on the face to trigger blood flow. “It’s similar to micro needling where you do mini injuries to the face to stimulate collagen production,” Dr Carissa Drilon-Dalman of wellness center Centro Holistico explains. “But for collagen to be produced, dapat maganda yung blood flow. So we put needles all over and it triggers proper blood flow to the face.”

For Tina, the centuries-old treatment has been a revelation. “My skin glows after every treatment — it’s like I have a healthy blush on my face.”

Bare and Bold

The natural glow that acupuncture imparts to Tina’s complexion beautifully complements her understated makeup. Having long bid a firm farewell to the cakey foundations of her modeling days back in the ’80s, she now embraces a fresh, minimal look, but never leaves home without a touch of lipstick and perfectly groomed, filled-in brows.

“Mature lips tend to be drier and may have issues with fine lines so it’s also best to use a sugar scrub to exfoliate dry lips before applying red lipstick," SAYS LALA FLORES

While a classic nude lip is her signature, Tina isn’t afraid to elevate her look with a bold red when she desires a more striking statement. “Deeper wine or berry reds often look more sophisticated and forgiving on mature skin,” says makeup artist Lala Flores, who has been prepping Tina’s face for shoots for more than a decade. Lala recommends prepping lips with a hydrating balm and letting it absorb for a few minutes to ensure smooth application. “Mature lips tend to be drier and may have issues with fine lines so it’s also best to use a sugar scrub to exfoliate dry lips before applying red lipstick.”

Using a lip liner is also key for women over 50. “Choose a liner that matches your lipstick shade or is just slightly darker then outline your lips to define the shape before filling in the lips with the liner as a base,” Lala continues. This helps the lipstick stay longer and makes the lips look fuller.

Refined Ease

The preference to keep things natural and fuss-free extends to her hair. “When I was a model, my hair was really abused. It was teased, crimped, pulled. There was a time when I had to really rest my hair,” Tina says. When she made the transition to motherhood and being an entrepreneur, how she dressed her hair became less of a priority. “It was easier to step out with a slicked-back style. It’s been easiest to put it up or pull it back, and it looked the most elegant on me.”

A long-standing relationship and friendship with celebrity hairstylist Henri Calayag has also resulted in a repertoire of effortlessly chic styles throughout the years — from polished bobs to glammed-up gamine cuts –– that could be worn with elegance and minimal fuss.

Even after decades in the style scene, Tina is still not immune to beauty advice from others, usually from her three grown-up daughters who willingly dish out suggestions, solicited or not. From them, she’s learned more about the benefits of the traditional East Asian healing technique of gua sha, which she regularly performs on her face to boost blood circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage.
