Your new step in your beauty routine is a simple yet effective way to tone, lift, and refresh your skin through targeted facial exercises and mindful movements

With all the high-tech treatments and injectables promising instant results, it’s easy to forget that your face—just like the rest of your body—has muscles that can be toned with exercise. Enter face yoga, the buzzy, non-invasive alternative that’s said to lift, sculpt, and smooth out your features with nothing but your own two hands. Think of it as a workout for your face: by practicing targeted movements and massages, you can ease tension, boost circulation, and help your skin appear more youthful. The best part? It costs nothing, requires zero downtime, and might just be a new addition to your beauty ritual.

Face yoga is exactly what it sounds like—a series of exercises designed to tone, stretch, and sculpt your facial muscles. Instead of needles or high-tech devices, it relies on targeted movements and massages to help lift and firm the skin naturally. Much like traditional yoga, it takes a holistic approach, focusing on strengthening facial muscles to counteract the loss of volume and elasticity that comes with age. Think of it as strength training for your face: with consistent practice, it can help smooth fine lines, improve circulation, and even prevent sagging. And just like your favorite yoga flow, certain facial movements can help release built-up tension. Whether you’re looking to maintain a youthful glow or simply want to give your face a little workout, face yoga might just be the low-maintenance, high-reward routine your skincare regimen is missing.

The Benefits

The benefits of face yoga go beyond just looking good—it’s a full-on wellness practice for your skin and muscles. With consistent effort, it can help tone and lift your facial contours, much like a good strength-training routine does for your body. Many practitioners notice a more defined jawline and a sculpted appearance after a few weeks of diligent practice. It’s also a natural way to soften fine lines, as seen in studies where regular facial exercises have helped participants look noticeably younger over time. Another bonus? It can help correct facial asymmetry by targeting weaker muscles and training them to be more balanced. And if you’re struggling with tech neck or jaw tension, certain exercises can even help tighten and relax the neck and jawline, leaving you with a more refined profile—and that effortless “vacation face” glow.

How Does It Work?

Think of face yoga as strength training but for your 57 facial muscles. By targeting specific areas, these exercises help improve muscle tone and tightness, giving your face a more sculpted look. They also increase circulation, which means better oxygen flow to the skin. Plus, regularly practicing these movements can help release stress-induced tension, preventing those fine lines from getting deeper. The key? Focus on lifting and expanding rather than scrunching or squinting, which can do more harm than good. Experts recommend setting aside at least 20 minutes a day for six weeks to start seeing noticeable results.

The Exercises

An example of a basic face yoga exercises to try is the Owl pose. If you tend to furrow your brows, this pose helps smooth out forehead lines and release built-up tension. Make a “C” shape with your hands, placing your index fingers above your brows and thumbs under your eyes. Gently pull down on your eyebrows while raising your forehead—think of it as resistance training for your upper face. Hold for two seconds, relax, and repeat five times for a lifted, awake look.

To smooth out forehead wrinkles, contract your forehead muscles and hold for 10 to 15 seconds before widening your eyes to stretch the skin. Repeat this movement ten times. For more defined cheekbones, take a deep breath and puff out your cheeks as if holding imaginary balloons, then swallow the air after a few seconds. Aim for twenty repetitions per session. Lastly, to tighten the neck and décolleté, smile while pulling down the corners of your mouth without dropping your chin, then gently press with your fingers as you attempt to open your mouth. Hold for a few seconds and repeat the exercise twenty times daily.

Face yoga can help, but overdoing it or using it incorrectly may worsen fine lines and affect dermal fillers

Face yoga might seem like a foolproof beauty hack, but like any workout, it’s all about proper technique. While the risks are minimal, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you have dermal fillers, this practice might not be your best bet—certain movements could cause fillers to break down more quickly, cutting their longevity short. And while face yoga aims to smooth and sculpt, overdoing it (or doing it incorrectly) could have the opposite effect, deepening fine lines and forehead wrinkles due to repeated muscle contractions. So remember: treat face yoga as a complementary practice rather than a miracle fix.
