Caring for your bikini area before, during, and after a wax can help ensure the best results and minimize discomfort
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, many opt for a bikini wax to feel extra confident and smooth for the occasion. But while the process itself may come with a few winces, the real challenge begins after you step out of the salon. A bikini wax isn’t just a test of pain tolerance; it’s also a commitment to proper aftercare. Your skin is at its most sensitive post-wax, making it crucial to soothe any irritation and prevent unwanted stubble, ingrowns, or fast regrowth. Whether you’re prepping for a romantic night or just indulging in a little self-care, knowing how to care for your freshly waxed skin will keep you feeling your best long after the appointment.

Before Your Appointment
Schedule Your Wax at the Right Time
Timing is everything when it comes to a bikini wax. Your skin tends to be more sensitive around your period, which can make the experience a lot more uncomfortable than it needs to be. Some salons even prefer not to perform waxing services during this time, so it’s best to schedule your appointment a few days before or after. If you’re unsure, call ahead to check their policy—better to plan than be turned away at the last minute.
Press Pause on Retinol and Strong Actives
Skincare ingredients that keep your skin glowing can sometimes work against you when prepping for a wax. Retinol, in particular, makes skin more sensitive and prone to irritation, or worse, tearing. While this tip is often mentioned for facial waxing, more body products now include retinol, so it’s worth double-checking your routine. Scan the ingredient lists on your body washes, oils, and lotions, and stop using any retinol-based products at least 10 days before your appointment to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

Let Your Hair Grow to the Right Length
As tempting as it may be to book a wax the moment you notice stubble, patience is key. Your hair should be around 1/8 to 1/4 inch long for the wax to properly grip and remove it from the root. Anything shorter might not lift, and anything much longer can make the process more painful. If you’re unsure, a good rule of thumb is to wait at least two to three weeks after shaving before booking your appointment.
During Your Appointment
Be Clear About What You Want
Not all bikini waxes are the same, so it helps to know exactly what you’re asking for before your appointment. A Brazilian wax removes almost everything—including hair between your legs and around the back—though you can choose to leave a strip or triangle in front if you prefer. A standard bikini line wax, on the other hand, only cleans up the areas that peek out from your swimsuit. Don’t hesitate to communicate your preferences with your wax technician—this is your wax, and you can shape it however you like.
Prepare for Some Pain
There’s no sugarcoating it—waxing isn’t the most comfortable experience. While everyone has different pain thresholds, some level of discomfort is inevitable. The good news? The pain is temporary and usually gets easier with regular waxing. If you’re worried about sensitivity, taking a pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment may help take the edge off. Most importantly, try to relax—tension can make the process feel more intense than it actually is.

After Your Appointment
Resist Touching Your Skin
After a bikini wax, your skin is delicate and prone to irritation, so it’s important to keep your hands off it. This means avoiding unnecessary contact, and even being cautious of other things that might touch the area, like tight clothing. In the first 24 to 48 hours, your skin is more sensitive than usual, so it’s best to skip activities that could cause friction, such as vigorous exercise or wearing clothes that rub against the skin. The less you irritate it, the quicker it will heal.
Give Yourself Time to Rest
Now’s the time to give your body a break. After a wax, skip the intense workouts or any movement that could generate heat, sweat, or friction in the treated area. Experts recommend wearing loose, breathable clothing to keep the skin comfortable. Tight or sweaty fabrics can lead to discomfort or even breakouts, so throw on your favorite cozy clothes and relax for a bit. Think of it as the perfect excuse to unwind and treat yourself to some well-deserved rest.
Shower Gently
You can shower after waxing, but it’s important to use lukewarm or cool water instead of hot. Hot showers can dry out your skin, and since your skin has been exfoliated during the waxing process, harsh soaps or body washes should be avoided as well. Stick to gentle cleansers, and definitely skip the hot bath for the day to prevent unnecessary irritation. If you need to freshen up, a cool shower will do wonders without aggravating the skin.

Stay Away from Heat
For at least two days post-wax, avoid heat sources like tanning beds, saunas, or steam rooms. These can irritate the freshly waxed skin and even cause breakouts or discomfort. Keeping the skin cool and calm helps it heal faster and stay smooth.
Take It Easy on Sex
It’s recommended to avoid sexual activity for at least 12 to 24 hours after your first couple of waxes, or if you have particularly sensitive skin. The skin in your bikini area will be more vulnerable immediately after waxing, and friction could cause irritation or discomfort. So if you have plans, get to scheduling your wax appointment now.
Exfoliate Gently
After two full days, if your skin isn’t red or irritated, you can start to gently exfoliate the area to help prevent ingrown hairs. A mild exfoliator or an Ayate washcloth works great, as it’s gentle and effective. This cloth is a better alternative to loofahs because it resists mold and provides a gentle scrub without causing damage to your skin. Make this part of your routine to keep your skin smooth and free from bumps.
