Apples Aberin Rewrites the ‘Mother of the Bride’ Dress Code

In a sheer, delicate, and daring Dennis Lustico piece, Apples Aberin proves that ‘Mother of the Bride’ dressing has no rulebook

The mother of the bride (MOB) is expected to dress the part, safely within the confines of lace, pastel, and prim silhouettes. Apples Aberin, however, had other ideas. For her daughter Sam Sadhwani’s second wedding ceremony to Department of Justice Spokesperson Mico Clavano, she stepped out in a custom Dennis Lustico piece that was anything but expected. Ethereal yet modern, it was a look that redefined what MOB dressing could be.

Light on the body and rich in detail, Dennis Lustico delivered. He draped a fine tulle-like fabric over a mocha underlay, creating a soft-focus effect. Organza patches intricately beaded into malunggay leaves—or what Aberin poetically called “branches from the tree of life”—brought an organic, almost mythical element to the piece. This was a fresh riff on Lustico’s signature confection of little squares, finished with precisely placed satin ribbons that tied the look together in every sense of the word.

Few mothers dare to push tradition forward on ceremonial events like their daughter’s wedding, but Aberin’s look proves that style never truly mellows with age or occasion. Look closely to see that even the smallest details of the piece challenged expectations. Take the side cut slicing from under the arm to the waist, bound only by satin ties, or the sheerness of it all that was definitely daring, but not an inch out of place.

It takes a certain kind of woman to wear a gown this atypic and uncontrived, and make it feel effortless, too. But Apples, statuesque and “forever svelte” in her dear friend Lustico’s words, wore it like a second skin. She skipped the usual MOB script for what Dennis Lustico aptly called a “not-so-Mother of the Bride” gown—one that was dreamy, modern, and threaded with culture.

After all, there’s no rulebook for what a mother of the bride “should” wear, and Apples Aberin knew this better than most.
